PITTSBURG, Kan. -- The Northwest Missouri State University baseball team dropped game one of its series against Pittsburg State, 12-10.Â
Pittsburg State moved to 11-5 overall and 2-2 in the MIAA, as Northwest dropped to 8-8 overall and 1-3 in league action.Â
Sophomore
Trey Morris went 3-for-5 from the plate, including a two-run shot, to lead the 'Cats offensively.
Caden Diel also collected two doubles in the setback.Â
The Bearcats came out swinging in the top of the first as Diel doubled down the left field line.
Ryan Williams brought in Diel on an RBI single to give the 'Cats an early 1-0 lead. Immediately after,
Trey Morris blasted a two-run shot to lead 3-0 after the top half. Pittsburg State answered back in the bottom half with three runs to knot the game back up at three after one inning played.Â
Bats were alive and well for the Bearcats as Williams blasted a solo shot to left to start the top of the third. Bearcat third baseman
Kaehukai Young gave Northwest a 5-3 lead with a double to left, bringing in
Brady Miles. Out of the eight-hole,
Max Pawela gave the Bearcats an 8-3 lead with a three-run shot to right. The 'Cats piled up six extra base hits in the first three innings.Â
Pittsburg State inched toward the Bearcat lead with four runs, four hits and one error in the bottom half of the fourth. Northwest still led 8-7 after four innings.Â
Back-to-back walks to start the top of the sixth required a pitching change for the Gorillas. Northwest would then capitalize on a SAC fly by Miles to bring in Diel to make it 9-7. Williams would then score on a passed ball to tack on another run for the 'Cats.Â
Quinn Mason's day was done after going five innings, six earned, and striking out five.
Brock Steggall made his sixth appearance of the year as he came in for Mason.Â
Pittsburg State tied the game up after Cade Clemons ripped a two-out, two RBi triple, and a wild pitch.Â
In the seventh, Junior southpaw
George Fisher came in for Steggall, making his second appearance of the season. Fisher was unable to get out of the inning, plunking two batters and striking out one, as
Jake Ciafullo came in to pitch for the 'Cats with bases loaded and one out in the seventh. Ciafullo got out of the bases loaded jam with a fly out to Slibowski. Score remained 10-10, all.Â
Diel recorded his second double of the game, fifth of the season, to start off the eighth, but Northwest failed to bring in the leading run.Â
Pittsburg State took the lead in the bottom of the eighth with a two RBI double, to seal the 12-10 victory.Â
Jake Ciafullo (0-2) was credited with the loss.Â
The Bearcats have scored 10 or more runs in the last three games, eight times total this season.Â
Northwest is back in action for game two of the series tomorrow at 1 p.m.
