TOPEKA, Kan. - The Northwest Missouri State University softball team was able to salvage its final game of the Washburn Invitational by scoring a 6-5 extra-inning victory over Minnesota-Crookston on Sunday at the Lake Shawnee Fields.
The Bearcats began the day with a 4-0 loss to the Augustana Vikings. Northwest went 2-3 on the weekend and sits at 7-7 overall.
AUGUSTANA 4, NORTHWEST 0
Augustana's Hailey Houston tossed a three-hit shutout to stymie the Bearcats in their first game of the day.
The Bearcat offense was limited to three hits.
Lillie Filger,
Omara Love and
Gaige Pinkerton each tallied singles against the Vikings.
Sara Farlow reached via a walk as a pinch hitter.
Bearcat starting pitcher
Cassidy Paulson tossed her first career complete game at Northwest. She allowed six hits and four runs (three earned). Paulson struck out two and allowed only one extra base hit (double).Â
NORTHWEST 6, MINNESOTA-CROOKSTON 5 (9 INNINGS)
The Bearcats had to play two extra frames before scoring the one-run victory to close out play on Sunday afternoon.
Northwest scored in the first inning when
Lillie Filger raced around to score on an
Abby Nolte double.
UMC scored four runs in the second off Bearcat starting pitcher
Hayden Simmons.
Filger scored her second run of the game in the third on an RBI single from
Alexis Brown to cut the lead to 4-2.
Annie Gahan rifled an RBI-double in the fourth to plate
Grace Lubben to slice the UMC lead to 4-3.
Northwest knotted the game at 4-4 when Brown doubled home
Avery Mayberry in the sixth.
UMC took a 5-4 lead in the top half of the ninth by taking advantage of its runner at second in the international tiebreaker format.
Northwest then posted a two-run ninth to take the victory. Filger began the inning at second base and scored on a throwing error as Brown had advanced her to third on a sacrifice bunt.
Lauren Gray moved Brown to second on another sacrifice bunt. Nolte drew a walk to put runners at first and second.
Skylar Pieper flew out to right which allowed Brown to move up to third on the second out of the inning.
Sophie Mayhugh knocked in Brown with the game-winning, two-out hit to give Northwest a 6-5 victory.
Filger went 2-for-5 with three runs scored. Brown went 3-for-5 with three RBI. Pieper went 3-for-4, while Mayhugh had three hits in five at bats.
Jadyn Streigle pitched the final seven innings and allowed only two hits. The only run she allowed was a team unearned run in the ninth playing with the international tiebreaker rules.
