Bearcat softball splits two one-run affairs with William Jewell, Wayne State

LIBERTY, Mo. - The Northwest Missouri State University softball team split a pair of one-run contests Saturday against William Jewell and Wayne State.

William Jewell scored a 4-3 win over Northwest, before the Bearcats came back to score a 3-2 triumph over the Wayne State Wildcats.

WILLIAM JEWELL 4, NORTHWEST 3
Northwest out-hit William Jewell, 8-3, but could not plate enough runs in a 4-3 loss to the Cardinals.

The Bearcats got on the board in the first on a sacrifice fly from Abby Nolte that scored Lillie Filger to make it 1-0.

Skylar Pieper delivered an RBI double in the third to plate Lauren Gray and give Northwest a 2-0 advantage.

William Jewell did all of its scoring damage in the bottom of the sixth with a four-run rally of Bearcat starter Jadyn Streigle (3-3).

The Bearcats had a chance to tie in the top of the seventh but left the tying run at third after getting there with no outs. Lela Bryant led off with a single. Annie Gahan tallied her second hit of the game, an RBI-triple that scored Bryant to pull the Bearcats to within one. Filger groundout out to the pitcher for the first out. Alexis Brown reached on a fielder's choice, but Gahan did not advance and stayed at third. Gray popped out to third and Nolte flied out to right to end the contest.

NORTHWEST 3, WAYNE STATE 2
The Bearcats were able to scratch across three runs on three hits to tally a one-run win over the Wayne State Wildcats.

Wayne State put up five hits and two runs against Bearcat starter Breck Dickey. Wayne State's runs came on a two-run homer in the fourth.

After facing a deficit for the first time in the game, Northwest came back with two runs in the bottom half of the fourth. Gaige Pinkerton singled home Alexis Brown for the first Northwest run. Sophie Mayhugh delivered a two-run double to plate Cora Schweitzer and Skylar Pieper to put the Bearcats on top for good, 3-2.

Dickey went the distance in the circle. She struck out 11 in gaining her second win of the season.
