TOPEKA, Kan. - The Northwest Missouri State University softball team came up on the short end of both contests today at the Washburn Invitational.
Winona State topped Northwest in its first game of the game, 13-5 (5 inn.). Southwest Baptist rallied for a 5-4 victory in Northwest's second game.
The Bearcats are 6-6 on the season. Northwest will wrap up play tomorrow in Topeka with games against Augustana (10 a.m.) and Minnesota-Crookston (2 p.m.)
WINONA STATE 13, NORTHWEST 5
The Warriors roughed up Bearcat starter
Kylee Rockhold in the first two innings for five runs. Winona State did not take it any easier on reliever
Olivia Moyer by adding eight runs (four earned) against her. The two Bearcat pitchers surrendered 13 runs on 11 hits in the five-inning contest.
Alexis Brown and
Skylar Pieper each homered in the game Saturday. For Brown it was her first collegiate home run, while for Pieper it was her fourth as a Bearcat.
Brown and Pieper each led the squad with two hits.
SOUTHWEST BAPTIST 5, NORTHWEST 4
Northwest was unable to hang on to a 4-1 lead and dropped a 5-4 decision to Southwest Baptist.
Annie Gahan and
Lillie Filger delivered RBI singles in the second as Northwest took a 2-0 lead.
SBU got on the board in the fifth with an unearned run off Bearcat starter
Breck Dickey to cut the lead to 2-1.
Northwest bolstered its lead in the sixth on a two-run homer by
Lela Bryant. It was Bryant's first homer of the season and fourth of her career.
SBU rallied for a three-run inning in the sixth to draw even at 4-4. SBU won the game in walk-off fashion in the seventh as the result of a Bearcat miscue in the outfield.
Filger went 2-for-4 with an RBI. Bryant went 2-for-2 with the two-run homer.
Dickey gained her 22nd complete game of her collegiate career. She pitched 6 1/3 innings and allowed five hits and five runs (three earned). She struck out six.
