Bearcats handle Hillcats for fourth-straight victory, 59-41

MARYVILLE, Mo. -- The Northwest Missouri State University women's basketball team (19-5 overall, 13-5 MIAA) took care of the Rogers State University Hillcats, 59-41.

Caely Kesten led Northwest with 15 points on 5-of-7 shooting and 2-of-4 behind the arc. 

Rogers State (9-14 overall, 4-13 MIAA) was led by Alayzha Knapp's 23-point performance. The Hillcats were held to 14-of-56 (25 percent) from the field and 2-of-14 (14.3 percent) from three-point range. 

Emma Atwood knocked in the first field goal of the game at the 6:56 mark in the first quarter. Northwest would spark an 11-2 run in just over four minutes toward the end of the opening quarter. Northwest was in the bonus for most of the first quarter, converting on 9-of-10 shots from the charity stripe. Northwest led 16-6 after one. 

Northwest's run carried over into the second, putting the Bearcats on a 23-5 run in just under 11 minutes. Laini Joseph led the Bearcats in scoring at the half with seven points. Knapp scored 10 out of the Hillcats' 12 points, as Northwest led 28-12 at the break. Northwest held Rogers State to 12 first-half points, which is the lowest first-half allowed since giving up 11 vs McKendree on Dec. 15, 2021. 

Back-to-back three-pointers to start the third quarter from Molly Hartnett and Lindsey Kelderman gave the 'Cats a commanding 33-12 lead. The Hillcats managed to put together a 9-0 run as Northwest's lead was cut down to 14 at the time. Northwest led 46-32 through three. 

The Bearcats outscored Rogers State 13-9 in the fourth quarter to secure the 59-41 victory. 

Northwest shot 37 percent from the floor, along with 13-of-17 (76.5 percent) from the charity stripe. Northwest's largest lead of the game came at 23 in the second half. Rogers State's only lead came on a pair of free throws to start the game. 

Northwest has clinched a spot in the 2024 MIAA women's basketball tournament at Municipal Auditorium in Kansas City, Mo.

The Bearcats are back in action on Saturday playing host to the Northeastern State University RiverHawks at 1:30 p.m. for Senior Day.
