Green’s double-double bests Northeastern State, 72-54 on Senior Day

MARYVILLE, Mo. -- The Northwest Missouri State women's basketball team (20-5 overall, 14-5 MIAA) sunk the Northeastern State University RiverHawks, 72-54 on Senior Day.

Jayna Green secured her third career double-double with 13 points and 13 rebounds. Green's double-double is her first since 2021. Caely Kesten also finished in double-figures with a game-high 21 points and eight rebounds.

Northeastern State's Courtney Lee led the RiverHawks (12-12 overall, 8-10 MIAA) with 18 points and five rebounds.

Caely Kesten nailed a three-pointer from the top of the key to get the action started for Northwest. A combined six threes for both teams led the start of the game.  Laini Joseph knocked in her second triple of the game with 40 seconds to go in the first quarter. As time expired, Northeastern State's Courtney Lee banked in a three to tie the game up at 15 after one.

Northwest put together a 9-2 run to start the second quarter. Halie Jones of Northeastern State pulled the RiverHawks within two on a high-arching three with 3:26 to play. Peyton Kelderman had an immediate answer to that as she buried another triple the next possession. The RiverHawks tied the game up at the half at 29, with a pair of free throws by Tor'e Alford.

The Bearcats regained the lead in the third with back-to-back buckets from Jayna Green and Caely Kesten. Northwest sparked a quick 8-0 run in just over two minutes to take a seven-point lead with four minutes remaining in the third.

Peyton Kelderman started to heat up from beyond the arc as she knocked in her third triple of the game with 9:23 to play. Northwest outscored Northeastern State, 18-6 in the final quarter.

Northwest took its largest lead of the game of 18 in the second half. The Bearcats shot 42.9 percent from the field and 43.3 percent from 3PT. Defensively, Northwest held Northeastern State to 29.1 percent from the field and 26.7 percent from beyond the arc.

The Bearcats reached the 20-win mark for the ninth time in program history, and the first time since the 2010-11 season.

Northwest will return to action on Saturday, Feb. 24, for a Pink Out game, taking on Missouri Western. Tip-off is set for 1:30 p.m.
