No. 3 Lopers vault past Bearcats in MIAA Tournament, 3-0

ST. JOSEPH, Mo. – The No. 3-ranked Nebraska-Kearney Lopers rolled to a 3-0 sweep of the Northwest Missouri State University volleyball team in the semifinals of the 2024 MIAA Tournament held at Civic Arena.
 
The Lopers (30-1 overall) gained their 30th win of the season by scoring a three-set win over the Bearcats (16-12 overall). UNK won by set scores of 25-9, 25-19 and 25-16.
 
UNK used nine service aces and held Northwest to a .067 hitting percentage as it advanced to the MIAA Tournament title match against No. 9-ranked and third-seeded Central Oklahoma. The Lopers and Bronchos will meet Saturday at 6 p.m. in Civic Arena.
 
The Lopers seized immediate control of the opening set by scoring 12 of the first 13 points. The Lopers completely dominated the opening set with a 25-9 triumph. The Lopers registered five service aces and littered the Bearcats with 13 kills. Northwest committed six attack errors and posted only five kills for a minus-.033 hitting percentage. Northwest sided out at 37% (9-of-24), while UNK had a 100% side out effort (10-of-10).
 
UNK built a 15-10 lead only to see Northwest dig deep and rally to tie the set at 16-16. After the set was tied, UNK scored five of the next six points to take a 21-17 advantage. UNK used a 9-3 run to close out a 25-19 win in the second set for a 2-0 lead in the match. Northwest hit .073 with 13 kills and 10 attack errors in the second set. UNK hit .235 with 13 kills and five errors. Northwest had a 52% side out percentage (13-of-25) in the second. UNK had a 68% side out effort (13-of-19).
 
UNK finished the three-set sweep with a 25-16 triumph in the third set. Northwest used a timeout with the Bearcats trailing 15-8 midway through the set. UNK moved the margin to eight at 23-15 when Northwest used its final timeout of the match.
 
NOTES: Payton Kirchhoefer posted a team-high nine kills … Ella Caffery tallied a team-best 18 assists … Avery Kemp, Kasidy Mohwinkle, Abby Brunssen and Caffey tallied for team-high honors with four blocks … Kyah Luhring was credited with a team-best 14 digs.
