TOPEKA, Kan. – The Northwest Missouri State women's soccer team was defeated by the No. 20-ranked Washburn Ichabods, 2-0, on Friday night at Yager Stadium.
Northwest tilts to 7-4-6 overall and 5-3-3 in the MIAA, as Washburn is now 11-3-2 overall and 8-1-1 in conference action.
Margaret Madden's return to the field sparked early offensive action for the Bearcats, as she nearly opened the scoring in the 31st minute with a shot that just cleared the crossbar. The Ichabods responded in the 40th minute, putting a shot on target that junior goalkeeper
Lily Ellis saved, keeping the match scoreless as both teams headed into halftime.
The first half saw Washburn outshoot Northwest 7-to-3, while also controlling corner kicks 3-to-1 and leading in shots on goal, 2-to-0.
The momentum shifted in the second half when Khloe Schuckman broke through for Washburn in the 49th minute, scoring to put Northwest in a one-goal hole. The Bearcats fought to regain their footing but struggled to find the net against a strong Ichabod defense.
In the 82nd minute, Schuckman added her second goal to Washburn's lead, extending the score to 2-0. Despite a strong effort, the Bearcats were unable to close the gap, resulting in a win for the No. 20 Ichabods.
Washburn tallied 16 shots (six on-goal), while Northwest struggled to get a shot off in the second half totaling three shots (none on-goal) on the night. The Ichabods won the corner kick battle 9-to-1.
Bearcat keeper Eliis provided four saves, which puts her at an even 260 in her career.
