MARYVILLE, Mo. – The Northwest Missouri State women's soccer team dropped its regular season finale 1-0 to the Emporia State Hornets Sunday at Bearcat Pitch.
Northwest finishes the regular season at 7-5-6 overall and 5-4-3 in MIAA play.
Ekaterina Theoharidis and
Makenna West led the Bearcat attack with five shots each, including three on goal from West.
Ximena Arnau also contributed with four shots.
The Bearcats controlled much of the first half, outshooting Emporia State 11-to-4 and recording the only corner kick of the period in the 38th minute. Goalkeeper
Lily Ellis made a key save toward the end of the half, deflecting a shot wide to keep the score even at 0-0 heading into halftime.
The Bearcats continued to press in the second half, but the Hornets found an opening in the 70th minute. A foul just outside the box awarded the Hornets a free kick, and Hadlie Lowe capitalized with a shot that skimmed off Ellis' gloves and into the net for the game's lone goal.
Northwest outshot Emporia State 20-to-9 and held the advantage in shots on goal (6-to-5) and corner kicks (4-to-1), but Emporia State's keeper, Mackenzi Goen, made six saves to keep the Bearcats scoreless. Ellis tallied four saves, raising her career total to 265.
