HAYS, Kan. - The Northwest Missouri State University volleyball team posted a 3-0 road sweep over the Fort Hays State Tigers at Gross Memorial Coliseum in MIAA action.
Northwest won by set scores of 25-16, 25-20 and 25-20. The Bearcat victory improved Northwest's record to 8-5 overall and 2-1 in MIAA play. FHSU fell to 9-3 overall and 1-2 in league matches. It was Northwest's 14th straight win over FHSU in the series between the two programs.
The Bearcats started quickly and captured the first set by leading from start to finish in a 25-16 win. Northwest used a 76% side-out effort in the opening set to take a 1-0 lead. Northwest hit .256 with 13 kills and only two errors. FHSU battled through 12 attack errors and 11 kills to hit minus-.020 in the first set.
Kasidy Mohwinkle paced the Bearcat attack with four first-set kills.
The second was the most competitive of the night as Northwest took it, 25-20. The second set featured six ties and three lead changes before Northwest seized control late in the set. Northwest recorded 14 kills as
Payton Kirchhoefer and
Abby Brunssen each nabbed four second-set kills. Northwest sided out at 55% and had a .200 hitting percentage. FHSU was able to side out at 43% and put up eight kills and eight errors.
Northwest closed out the three-set triumph with a 25-20 victory. Kirchhoefer and Brunssen each posted a team-high four kills in the third set. Northwest hit .250 and sided out at 61%, while FHSU hit .103 with seven kills and four errors.
FHSU was limited to .018 hitting in the match with 26 kills against 24 attack errors. Northwest hit .237 for the match with 44 kills and 17 errors.
Brunssen reached double figures in kills for the 11th time in 13 matches as she recorded a team-best 11 kills. Kirchhoefer gained 10 kills for her 10th double-figure kill effort this season.
Ella Caffery ran the Bearcat offense with 35 assists and four kills.
Kyah Luhring secured a team-best 18 digs, while
Olivia Dir put up 14 digs with six kills.
Northwest will return to action Saturday at 3 p.m. at No. 3-ranked Nebraska-Kearney.
