MARYVILLE, Mo. – The Northwest Missouri State women's soccer team (7-3-6, 5-2-3 MIAA) saw its impressive eight-game unbeaten streak come to an end with a tight 1-0 defeat against Pittsburg State.
Ekaterina Theoharidis and
Makenna West each recorded three shots, with Theoharidis placing two of her attempts on target.
In the first half, Northwest fired off seven shots while Pittsburg State managed four, with both teams registering three on target. West came close to giving the Bearcats the lead in the 27th minute when her shot struck the lower-right post, only to be saved by Gorilla goalkeeper Jocelyn Kramar, who made three saves in the opening half. Lily Ellis also kept the game level, stopping all three shots on goal, leaving the score tied 0-0 at halftime.
Ten minutes into the second half, the Gorillas opened the scoring with a header from Sailor Jensen, capitalizing on a corner kick opportunity. Following that goal, the Bearcats could only muster two shots on target, both of which were saved, resulting in Northwest's first home loss of the season, 1-0.
Despite the defeat, the Bearcats outshot the Gorillas 10-to-7, with both teams recording six shots on goal. The Gorillas made the most of their set pieces, earning five corner kicks in the second half and winning the corner-kick battle 6-to-5.
Ellis (5-3-6) made five saves, bringing her career total to 256.
