No. 25 Harding scores 3-1 win over No. 15 Northwest at Washburn Invite

TOPEKA, Kan. – The No. 25-ranked Harding University Bisons volleyball squad scored a 3-1 victory over the No. 15-ranked Northwest Missouri State University Bearcats at the 2023 Washburn Invitational presented by Hotel Topeka at City Center on Friday.
 
Harding won by set scores of 27-25, 25-17, 25-27 and 25-17. The match featured 22 ties and 11 lead changes.
 
Northwest scored the first three points of the opening set only to see Harding answer with a 14-3 run that gave the Bisons a 14-6 advantage. Northwest closed the margin to three at 18-15. Harding was poised to take the first set with a 23-18 lead, however the Bearcats scored six straight points to earn a set point at 24-23. Harding leveled the set at 24-24 and would edge past Northwest with a 27-25 win in the opener.
 
Harding closed the second set on a 10-3 run to take a 25-17 victory for a 2-0 lead in the match. Northwest was held to an .073 hitting percentage in the second. Harding hit .297 with 13 kills and two attack errors.
 
Northwest looked to battle back in the third set. Northwest held a 17-14 lead but a 5-1 Harding run gave the Bisons a 19-18 edge late in the set. Northwest knotted the set at 20-20 and then took a 22-20 lead forcing a Harding timeout. Harding came out of the timeout and rattled off three points to take a 23-22 lead which led to a Northwest timeout. Northwest was able to earn a pair of set points at 24-23 and 25-24only to see Harding draw even each time. Finally, the Bearcats secured a 27-25 win to draw within 2-1 in the match.
 
The Bisons were able to close out the match with a 25-17 triumph in the fourth set.
 
Northwest hit .146 for the match with 49 kills and 26 attack errors. Harding hit .201 with 55 kills and 24 errors. Harding tallied 10 service aces to four for Northwest. Harding out-dug Northwest, 68-66. Harding posted 11 team blocks to nine for the Bearcats.
 
Avery Kemp led Northwest with 12 kills and hit .345. Kyah Luhring notched a team-best 25 digs.
 
Northwest will return to the floor at 5 p.m. to take on Midwestern State University.
