Washburn claims MIAA/GAC men's tennis tournament title over Northwest

EDMOND, Okla. - The No. 24-ranked Washburn University Ichabods claimed the 2023 MIAA/GAC Men's Tennis Tournament championship with a 4-0 win over the No. 15-ranked Northwest Missouri State University Bearcats Friday at Edmond Center Court.

Washburn snapped Northwest's eight-match win streak. The Ichabods improved to 16-7 overall, while Northwest dropped to 14-6 overall.

The Ichabods claimed the doubles point with wins at No. 2 and No. 3 doubles.

Washburn went to work quickly in singles action and captured the first three matches to claim the title with a 4-0 dual win.

Washburn's Daniel Bird took down Northwest's Jan Skerbatis at No. 4 singles, 7-5, 6-1.

At No. 2 singles, WU's No. 47-ranked Sebastian Pjontek posted a three-set win over No. 45-ranked Michael Delebois, 1-6, 6-2, 6-3.

The clinching point came at No. 1 singles when WU's No. 28-ranked Tim Hammes overcame a first-set loss to No. 12-ranked Andrea Zamurri. Hammes won the match, 3-6, 7-6 (7-2), 6-3 to begin Washburn's on-court celebration.

The Bearcats will continue their season when the NCAA tournament brackets are announced. Northwest entered the week as the No. 1-ranked team in the Central Region. The top four teams in the Central Region will qualify for the NCAA Tournament. The NCAA Regional field will be announced on Monday, April 24 at 7 p.m. (CT) and the first rounds will take place between May 6 and 9.
