Northwest splits pair against No. 15 Washburn

MARYVILLE, Mo. – The Northwest Missouri State softball squad split a doubleheader with No. 15 ranked Washburn Saturday afternoon.
 
The Bearcats moved to 20-16 overall, 5-7 in conference play.
 
Washburn moved to 28-6 overall and 7-3 in MIAA action.
 
GAME ONE
The Bearcats took game one of the doubleheader against Washburn, 5-1.
 
Washburn was the first to strike as the Ichabods took a 1-0 lead in the top of the second inning off a single that brought in a run.
 
Northwest got its first run of the game on the board in the bottom of the fifth when Lillie Filger singled to the pitcher which allowed Skylar Pieper to cross the plate.
 
With the bases loaded in the bottom of the sixth, Madison Friest smashed a grand slam over the center field fence to give the 'Cats their first lead of the day.
 
Jadyn Streigle went 6.0 innings giving up just five hits and one run along with two strikeouts.
 
Hayden Simmons came in to replace Streigle in the top of the seventh and went three up, three down with two batters striking out looking.
 
Northwest recorded a 5-1 victory while outhitting the Ichabods by two.
 
Seven different Bearcats tallied a hit in the first game.
 
GAME TWO
Washburn got on the board with one run in the first, but the lead did not last long as the Bearcats took a 2-1 lead after a two run homer by Olivia Daugherty.
 
The Ichabods struck again in the second inning as they tied the game up at 2-2 with an RBI double.
 
Washburn sealed the deal scoring six runs in the sixth inning that gave them an 8-2 victory in game two of the doubleheader.
 
Olivia Daugherty and Avery Anderson were the only Bearcats to record a hit in the game.
 
Breck Dickey went for 5.2 innings allowing 10 hits and seven runs with one strikeout. Kylee Rockhold finished the game allowing one run on two hits and one strikeout.

NOTES: Lillie Filger is now tied for ninth in the school record book for stolen bases in a season. She is a perfect 16-for-16 so far this season. Olivia Daugherty hit her 40th career home run and 10th of the season in game two. Madison Friest hit her 21st career home run and her sixth of the season in game one.
