MARYVILLE, Mo. - The Northwest Missouri State University baseball team dropped a 4-2 decision to the Washburn University Ichabods in mid-week MIAA action at the Bearcat Baseball Field.
Washburn secured its second win over Northwest this season after previously earning a 9-8 victory on March 14 in Topeka, Kan. Washburn is 20-11 overall and 13-4 in MIAA play, while Northwest is 6-22 overall and 4-13 in league action.
Northwest out-hit Washburn, 9-6. The Bearcats managed to secure a hit in every inning, but could not put together a two-hit inning. The Ichabods took advantage of seven walks and a hit batsman to score four runs.
Bearcat starter
Max Spitzmiller worked the first four innings and allowed two hits. He struck out five batters, while walking three. Spitzmiller allowed one run as he tossed 78 pitches on the day. Spitzmiller moved to within one and 1/3 innings pitched of tying Joseph Hietpas for the most innings pitched in Bearcat history. Hietpas holds the mark at 309 2/3. Spitzmiller has tossed 308 1/3 innings in his Bearcat career.
Northwest reliever
Quinn Mason suffered the loss as he pitched the fifth inning and allowed two runs on one hit while issuing two walks. Mason threw 40 pitches in the fifth.Â
Jaxson Meyer pitched two innings in relief and he allowed one run on two hits. Meyer walked two and struck out one as he threw 37 pitches.
Jacob Gajic pitched the final two innings and allowed one hit to go along with three strikeouts. Gajic was limited to 29 pitches as he finished the game.
Ryan Koski was the lone Bearcat to manage two hits on the day. Koski managed a first-inning single and an RBI-single in the fifth.
Parker Griffith drove in Northwest's first run of the day with a one-out double to the right field wall in the second.
Jacob Selock reached on a one-out walk and flew around the bases when Griffith's shot found the gap.
Northwest did not advance a base runner past second base in the final four innings of play.
Northwest will travel to Wichita, Kan., to take on the Newman Jets in a three-set game this weekend. Friday's and Saturday's games will begin at 3 p.m.. Sunday's finale will start at 1 p.m. All three games can be viewed on The MIAA Network.
