WICHITA, Kan. – The Newman University Jets posted a 14-7 triumph over the Northwest Missouri State University baseball team in game one of a three-game series Friday afternoon.
The Jets move to 14-18 overall and 8-10 in MIAA play, while the Bearcats fall to 6-23 overall and 4-14 in league action.
Newman struck first with a three-spot in the first inning off Bearcat starter
Zach Wiese. The Jets took advantage of three doubles in the bottom half of the home first.
Freshman
Trey Morris ripped a monster shot to center field over the batter's eye to get the Bearcats on the board with a solo homer as he led off the second. Sophomore
Jacob Selock launched a two-out, three-run shot to center to put the Bearcats on top, 4-3.
The Jets drew even at 4-4 with a solo homer in the second.
Sophomore
Alex Bowers led off the third with a double down the left field line. He moved up to third on a groundout by senior
Ryan Koski. Morris singled to left to bring Bowers home and give Northwest a 5-4 advantage.
Freshman
Parker Griffith connected on his first collegiate home run when he led off the fourth with a drive to center. Griffith's homer put Northwest on top, 6-4.
The Jets level the count at 6-6 with a two-run rally in the fourth. The Jets scored on a wild pitch and a solo homer.
Wiese departed the game after the fourth having given up six runs (all earned) on seven hits. He struck out two and walked one.
Newman tallied a single run in the fifth to take a 7-6 lead.
Northwest used a two-out rally in the sixth to draw back even at 7-7. Selock singled with two outs and moved to second on a single by sophomore
Cole Slibowski. Bowers delivered an RBI single to center for his second hit of the contest. Koski lined out to second with runners on the corners to end the threat.
The Jets struck back with a six-run sixth inning on the strength of a pair of homers. Sophomore
Kade Barrick gave up a two-run homer and later in the inning sophomore
Alexander Lovin was hit with a three-run homer that gave Newman a 13-7 lead.
Newman ripped its fifth homer of the game in the bottom of the eighth to take a 14-7 lead.
Barrick was saddled with the loss as he went 1 2/3 innings and gave up five runs (three earned) on three hits. Barrick walked two and struck out three.
Selock and Morris each accounted for three-hit days in the loss. Selock knocked in three runs, while Morris drove in two.
The Bearcats and Jets will meet in game two of the series Saturday at 3 p.m. at McCarthy Field.
