Bearcats split pair in home opener vs. Augustana

MARYVILLE, Mo – The Northwest Missouri State softball team split a doubleheader against Augustana in its home opener Wednesday afternoon.
 
The Bearcats move to 14-10 overall.
 
Augustana goes to 8-7 overall.
 
GAME ONE
Augustana hit a two-run homer to give them a 2-0 lead in the third inning.
 
The Vikings hit two more home runs in the fourth inning. The first was a solo shot, and the second was a three-run home run to bring the score to 6-0 after four innings.
 
Augustana increased the lead once again in the fifth inning with a two-run home run as the Vikings took an 8-0 lead.
 
Northwest couldn't respond as Augustana took game one, 8-0.
 
Omara Love, Abby Nolte, Aubrey Griffith, and Lillie Filger all recorded a hit in the matchup.
 
Breck Dickey took the loss going five innings giving up eight hits and eight runs.
 
GAME TWO
Northwest was the first to strike in game two after Abby Notle hit it over the right fielder which scored Omara Love from second in the bottom of the first. Heading into the second inning, the Bearcats led 1-0.
 
Augustana stole home for its first run of the game and then tacked on one more run to take the lead at 2-1 after the second.
 
The 'Cats tied it back up in the bottom of the third when Sophie Mayhugh grounded out to the pitcher but recorded an RBI as Skylar Pieper scored.
 
Heading to the fourth, both squads had 2 runs.
 
Northwest regained the lead in the fifth as the Bearcats posted five runs. Mayhugh got it started with a double against the left field fence which advanced Brylee Kemper to third. Both Kemper and Mayhugh ended up scoring on an error by the left fielder to make the score 4-2. During the next at bat, Madison Friest sent the ball over the right field fence for a solo homer. Two batters later, Lillie Filger hit her first home run as a Bearcat that was a two-run home run to increase the lead to 7-2.
 
Augustana managed to get one run across in the seventh, but Northwest came away with the 7-3 victory.
 
Jadyn Streigle recorded the pitching win going 5.0 innings allowing six hits and four runs while also striking out two batters.
 
Northwest will host a doubleheader against Wayne State Monday, March 20 starting at 12 p.m.
