Hartnett leads Bearcats over Hornets, 55-48

MARYVILLE, Mo. -- The Northwest Missouri State women's basketball team came away with an overtime thriller against the Emporia State Hornets, 55-48.

Despite only knocking down one three in the game, Northwest battled back from a 16-point deficit to defeat the Emporia State Hornets, 55-48.

Molly Hartnett was exceptional down the stretch for the Bearcats. Hartnett corralled a game-high 20 points, six rebounds, and snatching away four steals.

A cold-shooting start from Northwest didn't make it easy in the first quarter. Northwest shot 2-of-13 from the field, 0-4 from beyond the arc. Therefore, Northwest trailed 15-8 after one quarter played.

Emporia State started off the second quarter on a short run that was quickly vanished by the Bearcats. A three-pointer by Laini Joseph seemed to spark the Northwest offense, to make it only a 10 point deficit midway through the second quarter.

A floater by Evelyn Vasquez capped off a 10-1 Bearcat run to end the half. Emporia State went into halftime with a 25-18 lead.

In the third quarter, the Northwest offense began to click, outscoring the Hornets 15-10. Northwest was within two points after a pair of free throws to end the third.

With one minute to play in the game, Laini Joseph secured an offensive rebound to get to the free throw line and tied the ball game up at 46.

Northwest forced a turnover with 10 seconds to play in the game to have a shot to win the game. The Bearcats were unable to get a shot off in the final seconds to send the game to overtime.

Molly Hartnett gave the Bearcats a four point lead with two minutes left in the overtime period. Northwest used free-throws to secure the overtime thriller against the Hornets.

Head Coach Austin Meyer picks up his fourth ever overtime win and the Bearcats move to 9-2 overall, 3-2 in MIAA, while the Hornets move to 5-5 overall, 3-2 in conference play.
