WICHITA, Kan. – The Northwest Missouri State University volleyball team extended its winning streak to three in a row with a four-set win over the Newman University Jets Wednesday evening.
The Bearcats won by set scores of 20-25, 25-16, 25-17 and 25-10. It is Northwest's first four-set win of the season. Northwest improves to 12-9 overall and 7-6 in MIAA play. The Jets fell to 0-20 overall and 0-12 in league action.
Junior
Abby Brunssen put up 16 kills to lead the Bearcats. Brunssen had a career-best 18 kills in Tuesday's five-set win at Missouri Southern. Brunssen had posted nine double-figure kill matches this season.
Redshirt freshman
Ella Caffery flirted with a triple-double as she posted 40 assists, eight digs and five kills to go along with two blocks and one service ace.
Junior
Kristen Ford tallied a team-best 16 digs and two service aces.
The Jets had lost its previous 12 matches in three-set sweeps before turning the tables on the Bearcats with a 25-20 win in the opening set. The Bearcats hit .095 in the first set with 10 kills and six attack errors. Newman hit .174 with 14 kills and six errors.
Northwest regrouped and did not lose a set the rest of the way.
The Bearcats hit .367 with 15 kills and four errors in the second set, while forcing the Jets to hit minus-.063. Northwest took the second set, 25-16.
Northwest hit .368 in the third set on the strength of 17 kills. Newman hit .171 with nine kills.
In the fourth, Northwest jumped all over Newman. Northwest scored 16 of the first 20 points of the set and cruised to a 25-10 victory.
Northwest will have the weekend off before returning to action in Bearcat Arena next Tuesday at 6 p.m. against the Missouri Western Griffons.
