MARYVILLE, Mo. – The Missouri Western Griffons turned the tables on the Northwest Missouri State University volleyball team by scoring a three-set win at Bearcat Arena.
The Griffons avenged a 3-0 loss to the Bearcats in St. Joseph, Mo., on Sept. 19. The Griffons improved to 16-7 overall and 9-5 in MIAA play. Northwest fell to 12-10 overall and 7-7 in league action.
Missouri Western won by set scores of 25-16, 25-17 and 25-19. The Griffons hit .331 for the match with 53 kills and only 10 attack errors. Northwest hit .143 with 35 kills to go against 16 attack errors.
The Griffons used an early 6-1 run to take an 8-3 advantage and did not look back as they scored a 25-16 first-set win. The Griffons hit .438 in the opening set with 15 kills and only one attack error. Northwest hit .146 with 13 kills, but countered with seven attack errors.
Missouri Western took a 2-0 lead with a 25-17 triumph in the second set. The Griffons hit .308 with 19 kills and three errors, while the Bearcats hit .115 with 12 kills and six errors.
The Griffons did not trail in the third as they opened up a five-point lead at 16-11. Northwest closed to within two at 21-19 and forced a Missouri Western timeout. However, the Griffons scored the final four points of the match to take the third, 25-19. MWSU hit .283 with 19 kills and six errors in the third set. Northwest hit .175 with 10 kills and three errors.
Abby Brunssen posted a team-high 10 kills and hit .391 with three blocks in the three-set match.
Ella Caffery handed out 20 assists in the first two sets.
Kristen Ford registered a team-best 15 digs.
Kyah Luhring tallied 11 digs.
The Bearcats return to action Friday when they play host to the No. 25-ranked Washburn Ichabods. First serve is set for 6 p.m. in Bearcat Arena.
