MARYVILLE, Mo. - The Northwest Missouri State University women's soccer team picked up its first MIAA win of the season with a 5-0 trouncing of the Newman University Jets at the Bearcat Pitch.
Northwest moves to 4-4-5 overall and 1-2-3 in MIAA play. Newman is 2-10-1 overall and 1-5-0 in league action.
The Bearcats recorded a season-high five goals and notched their first league victory after dropping two and having to settle for three ties. Northwest's five goals and four assists accounted for a season-high 14 points in the match.
Bearcat goalkeeper
Lily Ellis tied the school record for career shutouts with the 16th clean sheet. Ellis is tied with Kira Lazenby, who tallied 16 career shutouts from 2008-2009. Ellis collected her 13th career victory, which ranks No. 5 in program history.
Ellis faced only three shots all game and made her only save in the first half against the Jets. Northwest out-shot Newman, 30-3. Northwest had 16 shots on-goal, while Newman had only one.
Kaylie Rock knocked in her team-leading fifth goal of the year in the 19th minute to get the scoring started.
Makenna West was credited with her third assist on the season.
In the 27th minute,
Lucia Fernandez scored the first of her two goals. Fernandez found the net after receiving passes from
Ekaterina Theoharidis and
Teagan Blackburn on the play. It was Blackburn's first assist of the season and 11th of her Bearcat career. It was the first career assist for Theoharidis.
The Bearcats held a 2-0 lead at the intermission.
Fernandez tallied her second goal on a penalty kick in the 52nd minute.
Adell Gore had drawn a penalty in the box as the Newman goalkeeper Jordan Webster was issued a yellow card. Fernandez has scored three goals this season after going scoreless in the 2022 season.
The Bearcat offense kept churning when
Hannah Stirling posted her second goal of the season in the 59th minute. Stirling scored off an assist from Gore. Gore has handed out three assists this season and eight in her Bearcat career.
Theoharidis wrapped up the scoring as she took the ball straight down the field and found the back of the net in the 70th minute. It is the second goal of the year for Theoharidis. The goal gave Northwest a commanding 5-0 lead.
Northwest will return to action Sunday at 3 p.m. when it plays host to Central Oklahoma at the Bearcat Pitch.
