Bearcats take down Mountain Lions, 3-0

The No. 12-ranked Northwest Missouri State University volleyball team secured a 3-0 victory over the University of Colorado at Colorado Springs in its third match of the Britkare Lady Buff Classic in Canyon, Texas.
 
The Bearcats won by set scores of 28-26, 25-13 and 25-11. Northwest improved its mark to 3-0 on the young 2022 season. UCCS fell to 2-2 on the year.
 
Northwest limited UCCS to .010 hitting for the match. The Mountain Lions had 27 kills and 26 attack errors. Northwest hit .258 with 38 kills. Northwest also notched 18 total blocks in the three-set win.
 
Alyssa Rezac guided the offense with 27 assists. Jaden Ferguson secured a team-best nine kills. Kristen Ford was credited with 11 digs and Avery Kemp notched a team-high six blocks.
 
Northwest and UCCS battled tooth and nail in the opening set with the Bearcats prevailing 28-26. Northwest led 14-10, but UCCS rallied to tie it at 16-16. Northwest hit back with a 3-0 spurt only to be answered by a 3-0 run by UCCS to even it again at 19-19. Northwest looked to be in control at 24-21, but the Mountain Lions scored four in a row and held a set point. Northwest thwarted two set points by UCCS to eventually tie the set at 26-26. A big block from Payton Kirchhoefer and Abby Brunssen gave Northwest a 27-26 lead. Kirchhoefer followed with a kill to finish off the 28-26 set win for the Bearcats.
 
The Bearcats took an early 9-2 lead in the second set. UCCS battled back to within 13-10. Northwest used a 4-0 run to take a 17-10 lead. The Bearcats closed out the second set on a 7-1 run for a 25-13 triumph.
 
The third set began with a 3-3 tie through six points. Northwest used a 5-0 run and later a 7-0 spurt to open up a commanding 18-6 lead. Northwest breezed to a 25-11 victory in the third to close out the sweep.

Northwest will match up against tournament host and No. 14-ranked West Texas A&M to wrap up the Britkare Lady Buff Classic at 7 p.m.
