No. 12 'Cats slay No. 14 Lady Buffs in four

The No. 12-ranked Northwest Missouri State University volleyball team completed a perfect 4-0 weekend at the Britkare Lady Buff Classic with a 3-1 win over No. 14-ranked West Texas A&M University in Canyon, Texas.
 
Northwest won by set scores of 25-16, 25-22, 27-29 and 25-22. Northwest its first 11 sets of the season before dropping the third set to West Texas A&M.
 
A trio of Bearcats earned All-Tournament team honors led by MVP Payton Kirchhoefer. Kirchhoefer was joined on the all-tourney team by Jaden Ferguson and Alyssa Rezac.
 
The Bearcats took the home crowd out of the match early with a 17-5 start to the match. Northwest used a 10-1 run to take a 4-2 lead and stretch it out to 14-3. West Texas A&M cut the lead to 19-14, but following a timeout by head coach Amy Woerth the Bearcats closed the set on a 6-2 spurt.
 
The second set featured nine ties with the last one occurring at 16-16. Northwest scored three straight points and continued its run by notching five of the next six points total to increase its lead to 21-17. West Texas A&M again used a late run to cut the lead to one at 23-22. Northwest secured the final two points of the set to take a 2-0 lead.
 
The level of play jumped to a higher plane in the third set. The set was tied 13 different times. West Texas A&M held a 21-18 lead late in the set only to see Northwest even it back up at 21-21. Northwest had three match points that West Texas A&M was able to fend off. West Texas A&M finally closed out the set on its third set-point at 29-27. West Texas A&M hit .463 in the set with 21 kills and two errors. Northwest hit .271 with 19 kills and six attack errors.
 
The Bearcats overcame a four-point deficit in the fourth set to post a 25-22 victory. West Texas A&M jumped out to a 12-8 lead early in the fourth. Northwest continued to cut away at the lead and knotted it at 16-16. The match would stay tied at 17-17, 18-18, 19-19, 20-20, 21-21 and 22-22. Northwest's Olivia Dir matched a career-high with her 15th kill of the match to give Northwest a 23-22 lead. West Texas A&M committed two attack errors that allowed Northwest to close out the 25-22 victory.
 
Northwest had four players reach double figures in kills. Kirchhoefer (18 kills), Dir (15 kills), Ferguson (12 kills) and Avery Kemp (10) each tallied double-figure kill efforts. It was the seventh career double-figure kill match from Kemp and fourth career from Dir.
 
Rezac collected her second double-double of the season (17th of her career) with 52 assists and 12 digs.
 
Libero Kristen Ford secured a team-best 16 digs.
 
Northwest posted 63 kills and hit .273 in the match. West Texas A&M hit .247 and 56 total kills.
 
West Texas A&M's record in its home arena fell to 508-83 with the Northwest triumph.
