Softball snaps MIAA skid in opener of doubleheader vs Northeastern State

MARYVILLE, Mo. – The Northwest Missouri State softball team snapped a 10-game MIAA losing skid in the opening game of Saturday's doubleheader with visiting Northeastern State University.

The Bearcats (7-30, 1-11 MIAA) split the series between the RiverHawks (20-17, 8-4 MIAA) as Northwest hit five home runs in the first game to take it 12-4 in five innings. NSU came back to win the second game, 7-4.

GAME ONE
The Bearcats used a five-homer attack to score a five-inning victory in the first game of the day.

Northwest started off hot as Olivia Daugherty hit a three-run bomb to left giving the Bearcats a 3-1 lead in the first.

After the RiverHawks put up one run in the top of the third, the Bearcats hit a trio of solo shots. Daugherty got it started with her second home run of the day. Hannah Blackford recorded a home run of her own and two batters later Abby Nolte followed with yet another round-tripper. After three, Northwest led 6-2.

Northwest picked up right where they left off in the third as Jacee Winn was able to score on an error. Lauren Gray had herself a day as she recorded a grand slam to give Northwest an 11-2 lead.

After the RiverHawks recorded two runs in the top of the fifth, Skylar Pieper singled up the middle allowing Brylee Kemper to score to give the Bearcats an eight-run lead to close it out with a run-rule victory.

Breck Dickey pitched a complete game to earn her fourth win of the season.

GAME TWO
The Bearcats fell short in game two, 7-4.

Abby Nolte hit a two-run home run to even the game up at 2-2 after two innings.
In the bottom of the fourth, Madison Friest hit a solo homer to right putting the Bearcats up 3-2. Lauren Gray recorded her first home run of the game, second of the day, as she gave Northwest a 4-2 lead heading into the fifth.

The Riverhawks hit a pair of solo homers in the sixth to take a 6-4 lead.

NSU would hit another solo home run in the seventh to finish the scoring.

The Bearcats brought the tying run to the plate with one out in the seventh. However, Daugherty reached on a fielder's choice and Friest to ground out to shortstop to end the threat and the game.

Raven Defrain took the loss as she pitched into the sixth. Hayden Simmons took over for Defrain and struck out three batters in two frames of work.

Northwest will be back in action Sunday at home beginning at Noon against No. 3-ranked Rogers State.
