MARYVILLE, Mo.. - Northwest Missouri State University junior pitcher
Max Spitzmiller dazzled on the mound Friday as he tossed a two-hit shutout over the visiting Newman Jets at the Bearcat Baseball Field.
Spitzmiller tied a season-high with 11 strikeouts while working his league-leading fifth complete game. It is the first shutout of Spitzmiller's collegiate career.
Spitzmiller allowed a two-out single in the second and a leadoff infield single in the seventh for Newman's only two baserunners. The seventh inning hit was erased on a double play ensuring the Jets would not get a runner past first base in the contest.
Northwest engineered its only run of the game in the bottom of the sixth.
Caden Diel led off with a single.
Cole Slibowski advanced him to second on a sacrifice bunt.
Jacob Pinkerton followed with a single that sent Diel to third.
Brett Holden dropped down a bunt single to third as Diel raced home for what proved to be the only run of the game.
Drew Mackie loaded the bases with a single, but
Donovan Warren was retired on a double-play ball to end the sixth.
The Bearcats managed seven hits on the day. Holden and Diel each came through with two hits against the Jets.
