MARYVILLE, Mo. - The Northwest Missouri State University baseball team snapped a six-game losing skid by splitting a doubleheader Saturday at Emporia State.
The Hornets captured a 3-0 win in game one, and the Bearcats bounced to score a 7-5 triumph in the nightcap.
The squads will wrap up the three-game set Sunday at 1 p.m. at the Trusler Sports Complex.
GAME ONE
The Bearcat offense was limited to five hits in a 3-0 shutout loss in the opener of the three-game series.
Northwest starter
Max Spitzmiller pitched his third complete game of the season. Spitzmiller took the loss (2-5) as he struck out six and scattered seven hits. The Hornets scored three runs off Spitzmiller.
ESU's scoring consisted of an RBI double in the fourth and a pair of run-scoring singles in the fifth.
Senior outfielder
Donovan Warren had a two-hit game as he went 2-for-3 with a walk. Warren also added a stolen base.
GAME TWO
The Bearcats bounced back in game two with a 7-5 victory.
Jacob Pinkerton went 3-for-4 from the leadoff spot.
Tyler Peters collected two hits as the designated hitter.
Ryan Williams also tallied two hits and scored two runs for the Bearcats.
Starter
Zach Wiese went six strong innings. He picked up his first win of the year. Wiese struck out six and allowed only two runs (both earned). Josh Mitchell and
Alexander Lovin worked in relief of Wiese and were touched up for a combined three runs in the eighth.
Jacob Gajic recorded his second save as he worked around a pair of hits in the ninth.
ESU got on the board first with a single run in the third.
Northwest erupted for a five-run rally in the fourth.
Ryan Koski scored on a wild pitch to level the score at 1-1.
Jake Emhardt lifted a sacrifice fly to center to plate Peters to give Northwest a 2-1 advantage.
Caden Diel delivered an RBI single up the middle to score
Ryan Williams and up the edge to 3-1.
Drew Mackie was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to score
Jacob Pinkerton and make it 4-1.
Donovan Warren drew a bases loaded walk to wrap up the five-run inning.
Williams ripped a solo home run to left field in the fifth to give Northwest a 6-1 advantage.
ESU answered with a solo homer in the sixth off Wiese.
Peters came through with an RBI single in the eighth to up the lead to 7-2.
The Hornets blasted a three-run home run in the eighth to pull within 7-5, before Gajic closed it out in the ninth.
