MARYVILLE, Mo.– The Nebraska-Kearney Lopers swept a conference doubleheader Monday afternoon against the Northwest Missouri State University Bearcat softball team.
The Lopers won game one, 12-4, and they also took game two, 4-1.
Northwest drops to 5-17 (0-2 MIAA), while Nebraska-Kearney improves to 7-12 (2-0 MIAA)
GAME ONE
The Lopers posted a 12-4 victory over the Bearcats in the opening game.
Kearney started off by hitting a two-run home run in the top of the first. The Bearcats were held scoreless until the bottom of the second when
Madison Friest homered to cut the lead to 2-1 heading into the top of the third.
The Bearcats brought in two more runs with
Olivia Daugherty and
Lauren Gray each bringing in a run to take a 3-2 lead going into the fourth inning.
Abby Nolte recorded an RBI in the bottom of the fourth to extend the Bearcat lead to 4-2.
The Lopers scored one run in the top of the fifth to cut the Northwest lead to 4-3. In the top of the sixth, Kearney regained their first lead since the first inning scoring five runs to take an 8-4 lead.
In the final inning, the Lopers added four more runs to extend their lead to 12-4.
Breck Dickey took the loss as she pitched 5 2/3 innings. Dickey gave up eight runs, all of them earned.
Christina Campbell pitched 1 1/3 innings, giving up four runs, all of them earned.
GAME TWO
Nebraska-Kearney was able to get the series sweep in game two of the doubleheader with a score of 4-1.
The Lopers began the second game just as they ended the first. They took a quick 2-0 lead in the first inning, and then added two more runs in the top of the third making the lead 4-0.
In the bottom of the third, Northwest's
Skylar Pieper brought in an RBI for the Bearcats's first score of the game cutting the Loper lead to 4-1.
That would be the last of the runs for the day by either team.
Hayden Simmons suffered the loss giving up four hits and four runs, all earned.
The Bearcat softball team will be on the road this weekend in St. Joseph, Missouri, to take part in the Fairfield Classic on Friday and Saturday.
