Northwest outlasts Washburn in overtime, 58-53

MARYVILLE, Mo. – The Northwest Missouri State University women's basketball team went to overtime to post a 58-53 home win over the visiting Washburn University Ichabods at Bearcat Arena.
 
Northwest moved to 16-9 overall and 11-8 in MIAA play. Washburn fell to 12-13 overall and 10-9 in league action.
 
Northwest led by as many as 10 points in the second quarter at 17-7. Washburn used a 17-6 run to take a 24-23 lead with 1:20 left in the first half. Peyton Kelderman sank a three-pointer with just over a minute to play in the half to give Northwest a two-point lead at 26-24. Washburn's Hunter Bentley made a pair of free throws with :05.5 remaining to wrap up a 14-point scoring half for her. It sent the squads into the locker rooms deadlocked at 26-26.
 
Washburn opened up a seven-point cushion at 38-31 with 2:40 to play in the third. Northwest whittled the lead to 40-38 at the close of the third.
 
Kelsey Fields scored on a putback to draw even at 40-40 to start the fourth quarter. Mallory McConkey accounted for a five-point stretch that gave Northwest a 45-42. Emma Atwood connected on one of two free throws with 1:40 remaining to leave Northwest in the lead at 56-44. Washburn's Abby Oliver also split a pair of free throws with 1:13 to pull the Ichabods to within one at 46-45. Washburn's Macy Doebele scored on a layup with :20.0 remaining to give the Ichabods a 47-46 lead.
 
Following a timeout, Kelderman knocked in her third three-pointer of the game with :11.5 left that put Northwest on top, 49-47. But Doebele answered on the other end to tie the game with :02.2 and force overtime.
 
Fields scored on Northwest's first two possessions of overtime to help the Bearcats take a 53-49 lead. Washburn tallied a pair of buckets to draw even again with 2:35 to play in the extra session.
 
McConkey put Northwest up for good with a basket with 2:18 remaining. Kelderman hit one of two free throws with :17.8 left and Hartnett sank two more free throws with :03.0 remaining to close out the five-point win.
 
McConkey scored a team-high 16 points. Kelderman added 12 points. Fields posted eight points and 12 rebounds. Molly Hartnett handed out a game-high five assists.
 
Northwest will be back in action Monday at home against Emporia State University. Tip is set for 5:30 p.m. at Bearcat Arena.
 
NOTES: Northwest made 7-of-30 three-pointers, while Washburn was limited to 1-of-6 from deep … Freshman Peyton Kelderman has made at least one three-pointer in all 25 games this season … she is the only member of the MIAA to achieve that feat this year … Kelderman has made at least two three-pointers in 17 of 25 games … Kelsey Fields notched her eighth double-figure rebound performance with a game-high 12 rebounds … Northwest captured its 10th home win of the season tying it for the most home wins since the 2010-11 team went 15-0 at home … Northwest is 12-4 when McConkey scores 10 or more points.
