Women's basketball set for pivotal MIAA home matchups with Hornets, Ichabods

NORTHWEST SET FOR PIVOTAL MATCHUPS WITH EMPORIA STATE, WASHBURN IN BEARCAT ARENA
The Northwest Missouri State University Bearcat women's basketball team (15-9 overall, 10-8 MIAA) is set for a pair of pivotal home conference matchups that will go a long way toward seeding for the MIAA Tournament. Northwest will be challenged by Washburn (12-11 overall, 10-7 MIAA) Saturday at 1:30 p.m. in Bearcat Arena. Northwest will take on Emporia State (12-11 overall, 7-10 MIAA) Monday at 5:30 p.m.

NORTHWEST VS. EMPORIA STATE
Emporia State owns a 45-15 advantage in the all-time series with Northwest.
    Northwest snapped a 15-game losing streak in the series with a 70-54 victory last week at White Auditorium in Emporia, Kan. It marked the first win for Northwest in Emporia since the 2002 season.
    Northwest's last win at home over ESU came Jan. 22, 2011, when the Bearcats posted a 91-62 triumph in Bearcat Arena.

The first 300 fans to arrive Thursday night for the Emporia State game will receive a free shirt courtesy of Student Body. Gift cards to Student Body and Planet Sub will also be given out throughout the night.

PINK OUT SET FOR SATURDAY VS WASHBURN
Saturday's matchup with Washburn will be a Pink Out game. Check out the online auction site for all of your bid needs. The online auction begins at 9 a.m. Thursday and will close at 4:30 p.m. Saturday. Winners will be notified via text message to pick up items at the game or arrangements can be made to pick up items at a later date.

NORTHWEST VS. WASHBURN
Washburn holds a 60-11 lead in the all-times series with Northwest. The Ichabods have won 16 of the last 17 matchups with the Bearcats.
    Northwest has lost seven in a row at home to Washburn. Northwest's last win over Washburn in Bearcat Arena came Jan. 26, 2011 in a 71-63 victory.

BEARCATS CLINCH SPOT IN MIAA TOURNEY
Northwest has clinched a spot as one of the 10 teams that will compete in the 2022 MIAA Tournament set for March 2-6 at Municipal Auditorium in Kansas City, Mo.
    The top six seeds receive byes into the quarterfinals, while the teams finishing in the seven, eight, nine and 10 spots will play in Kansas City to reach the quarterfinals.

NORTHWEST KNOCKS OFF ESU IN EMPORIA FOR FIRST TIME IN 20 YEARS
Northwest posted a 70-54 victory at Emporia State on Feb. 8, marking the first win for the Bearcats at White Auditorium in 20 years.
    Northwest's last win in Emporia, Kan., came on Jan. 2, 2002, when the Bearcats tallied an 81-66 triumph over the Hornets.
    It was also head coach Austin Meyer's first win over the Hornets since taking over as the Bearcat leader. Meyer has recorded a win over every MIAA team except Central Missouri and Fort Hays State.


PROTECTING BEARCAT ARENA
Northwest has produced a mark of 9-3 in Bearcat Arena this season. The nine home wins are the most victories in Bearcat Arena since Northwest went 10-4 at home in the 2012-13 season.

MCCONKEY TIES CAREER-HIGH WITH 7TH 20-POINT SCORING OUTBURST
Senior Mallory McConkey tied her career-high with 27 points in a 70-54 win at Emporia State.
    McConkey produced her seventh career 20-point scoring game against the Hornets as she went 10-of-11 from the floor. She also tied a career-high with four made three-pointers in four attempts.
    McConkey has recorded a team-best 48 double-figure scoring games in her career.
    McConkey was the only Bearcat to reach double figures against Missouri Southern with a 17-point performance Saturday in Joplin, Mo.

MCCONKEY MAKING IT ALL HAPPEN
Fifth-year senior Mallory McConkey finds a way to contribute in all areas on the floor.
    McConkey leads the team in scoring (11.5 ppg), made field goals (107) and double-figure scoring games (14).
    McConkey ranks second on the team in assists (43).
    McConkey is third on the squad in rebounding (3.9 rpg).
    She is shooting 53.8% from the field.
    Northwest is 11-4 when McConkey scores 10 points per or more. Northwest is 4-5 when McConkey is held below 10 points.

MCCONKEY DIALED IN AT ESU
Senior Mallory McConkey notched the highest field goal percentage game this season by an MIAA player (91.7%) by making 10-of-11 field goals at Emporia State.
    She ranks tied for No. 8 in the nation this year in highest field goal percentage in a single game among Div. II players.

GREEN WORKING FOR BLOCKS
Sophomore Jayna Green ranks No. 6 on Northwest's all-time blocked shots chart with 98 career shots swatted. She registered 29 blocks as a freshman before notching 33 in 2020-21.
    Green ranks No. 10 on Northwest's single-season blocked shots chart with 36 this season. She ranks No. 3 in the MIAA in total blocks.
    Green ranks second on the team in rebounding at 5.3 boards per game.

BACK-TO-BACK DOUBLE-FIGURE GAMES
Sophomore Jayna Green put together back-to-back double-figure scoring games for the first time in her Bearcat career. Green scored a career-high 13 points against Missouri Western and followed it up with 10 points at Emporia State.
    She narrowly missed making it three in a row as she posted nine points in Northwest's 66-62 setback at Pittsburg State.

STAT TALK FOR HARTNETT
Molly Hartnett ranks No. 2 on the team in scoring at 10.9 points per game. She has handed out a team-high 55 assists on the year.
    Hartnett ranks No. 6 in the MIAA in free throw percentage (80.6%) as she has made 75-of-93 free throws.

KELDERMAN FINDS A GROOVE FROM 3
True freshman guard Peyton Kelderman has made at least one three-pointer in all 24 games this season. Kelderman has sank at least two three-pointers in 16 of the 24 contests.
    She is the only MIAA player this year to have made a three-pointer in every contest.

MORE THREE-POINT TALK FROM PK
She has drained a team-best 46 three-pointers and is shooting 34.3% from beyond the arc. She ranks tied for No. 3 in the MIAA in most three-pointers made (46). She ranks No. 4 in the league in three-pointers made per game (1.9).
    Kelderman ranks third on the team in scoring at 8.3 points per game. She has reached double-figure scoring in nine games, with a season-high 16 points in a 65-62 win vs. Winona State.

FIELDS STEPS UP IN LAST 12 GAMES
Freshman Kelsey Fields is averaging 6.2 points and 8.6 rebounds per game over her last 12 appearances.
    She has tallied 103 rebounds (39 offensive) in her last 12 games. Teammate Jayna ranks second in that stretch with 56 rebounds.
    In her last 12 games, Fields is shooting 59.6% (28-of-47) from the field.
    She has posted seven double-figure rebound performances to go along with a pair of double-digit scoring efforts.
    Fields played a season-high 30 minutes against Central Missouri. She posted seven points and 11 rebounds against the Jennies.

DOUBLE-DOUBLE AGAIN FOR FIELDS
Freshman post Kelsey Fields secured her second double-double of the season with 10 points and 10 rebounds against Lincoln,
    Fields earned her first collegiate double-double with 11 points and 14 rebounds at Washburn.

VAZQUEZ MAKING PLAYS
Freshman Evelyn Vazquez registered a career-high nine rebounds in Northwest's 70-54 win at Emporia State. Vazquez stuffed her stat sheet against the Hornets with seven points, nine rebounds, three assists and two steals.
    Vazquez has come off the bench in 23 games and is averaging 18.3 minutes per game.
    Vazquez leads the Bearcats in steals (23).
    She ranks third on the squad in assists (40). Vazquez has dished out 33 of her assists in MIAA play.
    She is averaging 5.3 points per game. She scored a season-high 13 points in a win over Missouri S&T.

BEARCATS RANK SECOND IN MIAA IN SCORING DEFENSE
The Bearcats rank No. 2 in the MIAA (No. 20 in the nation) in scoring defense by holding opponents to 55.7 points per game. Nebraska-Kearney leads the league in scoring defense at 55.1 points per contest.
    Northwest has held seven opponents to fewer than 50 points, including a season-low of 29 to McKendree.

PERIMETER DEFENSE LOCKED IN
Northwest's defense ranks No. 1 in the MIAA in fewest three-point shots attempted (256). Northwest ranks No. 1 in the league fewest three-point field goals made by the opposition (70).
    Among Div. II teams that have played at least five games, Northwest ranks No. 3 in the nation in fewest 3-pointers attempted by its opponents (256).
    Northwest ranks No. 5 in the nation in fewest three-pointers allowed by its opponents (70).

HARTNETT DOING CHARITY WORK IN WIN
Redshirt freshman Molly Hartnett sank a career-high 15-of-18 free throws in the 10-point win at Central Oklahoma.
    Her 15 made free throws ranks as the fifth-best single-game total in Bearcat history.
    The 18 free throw attempts ties for the third-most in school history.

FOUR ROAD WINS IN MIAA PLAY
Northwest has produced four road MIAA victories this season and has a 4-5 mark away from Bearcat Arena in league play.
    Since 2000, the four MIAA road wins rank as the fifth-most for the Bearcat women's basketball program in that time frame.

BEST NON-CONFERENCE SINCE TURN OF THE CENTURY FOR THE BEARCATS
Northwest completed its non-conference slate with a 5-1 record and an 83.3% win percentage - its best since the turn of the century.
    Northwest went 7-2 (77.8%) in 2004 and 2007, 6-2 (75.0%) in 2013 and 8-3 (72.7%) in 2006 for its top non-conference marks since 2000.
    Northwest produced an 14-0 non-conference mark in the 1983-84 season under head coach Wayne Winstead for its best pre-MIAA mark in program history en route to a regular season league crown.

HOT SHOOTING VS MISSOURI SOUTHERN
Northwest shot a season-best 59.0% from the field (23-of-39) in its 61-51 win over Missouri Southern. It is the second time this season that Northwest has shot 50% or better.

SEVEN-GAME WIN STREAK
Northwest's seven-game win streak was the longest for a Bearcat team since an 11-game win streak in the 2010-11 season.
    Northwest's longest win streak in school history is 20 set in the 1983-84 season from Nov. 18, 1983, to Feb. 1, 1984.

50 SEASONS STRONG
The Bearcats are playing in their 50th season as a program. The first women's basketball season was in 1971-72 when head coach Sherri Reeves led the 'Cats to a 9-2 record as MAIAW Champions. Northwest also finished 5th in the AIAW Region VI Tournament where they defeated Wayne (Neb.) State, 74-62, before falling to Kansas State, 70-66.

BEARCATS INK ST. JOSEPH PRODUCT
Northwest Missouri State University head women's basketball  coach Austin Meyer has announced a signee for the Bearcats' 2022-23 recruiting class.
    Ella Moody is a 5'10", guard from St Joseph, Mo. She will graduate from Central High School this spring and has accumulated a 3.9 GPA. Moody was a part of the Class 6 all-state team, the first in Missouri's history. She was selected the Suburban Conference Player of the Year and was an all-district selection, finishing among the Kansas City metro leaders at 19.2 points per game, averaging 6.4 rebounds.

Northwest head coach Austin Meyer will be available each Tuesday from Noon - 1 p.m. for a press conference at the Maryville Pizza Ranch.
