No. 18 Bronchos tally overtime triumph over No. 2 Bearcats, 76-75

EDMOND, Okla. – The No. 18-ranked University of Central Oklahoma Bronchos posted a 76-75 overtime win over the No. 2-ranked Northwest Missouri State University Bearcats at Hamilton Field House.
 
The Bronchos (16-2 overall, 11-1 MIAA) withstood a shooting barrage from Bearcat junior Trevor Hudgins and hung on for a one-point victory snapping Northwest's 14-game winning streak. The Bronchos extended their win streak to 12 in a row. Northwest drops to 16-2 overall and 9-1 in the league. The Bearcat loss also snapped a 25-game MIAA winning streak and a 23-game road winning streak.
 
Hudgins tied his own school record by draining 11 three-pointers as he tallied a game-high 39 points.
 
UCO's Isaiah Wade notched the game-winner with :02.6. left in overtime as he scored a team-high 29 points. UCO's Callen Haydon posted 27 points, including five in overtime.
 
The Bronchos bounced out to an 11-3 lead less than four minutes into the contest. Northwest made only four of its first 16 shots from the field as UCO built a 29-15 lead. Northwest used an 8-2 spurt to cut the margin to 29-21 with 5:49 to play in the half. Northwest failed to make a field goal in the final four minutes of the first half, but only trailed 34-25 at the intermission.
 
UCO shot 58.3% from the floor (14-of-24 FGs), while Northwest made 9-of-29 field goals (31.0%) in the opening half. UCO's Isaiah Wade had his way with Northwest in the first 20 minutes as he posted 16 points on 6-of-9 shooting.
 
The Bearcats trailed by as many as 12 in the second half when the Bronchos took a 40-28 advantage. Northwest battled back and drew even at 52-52 in a driving layup by Diego Bernard with 6:06 to play in regulation.
 
UCO's Hayden scored five in a row on his own to open up a 57-52 lead with 4:09 to play. After falling behind 59-55, Northwest got a pair of free throws from Bernard and took a 60-59 lead in a Hudgins three-pointer with 2:16 on the clock. Bernard sank one of two free throws with :32.4 left to give Northwest a slim, two-point lead at 61-59.
 
Hayden drained a triple from the corner with :12.5 remaining to put UCO back on top, 62-61. After a scoreless possession on Northwest's end, UCO's Jaden Wells hit a pair of free throws with :06.3 left.
 
Hudgins took the ensuing inbounds and split a pair of defenders that ended with him burying a three-pointer with :00.3 left to force overtime at 64-64.
 
Hudgins hit his 10th three-pointer to begin overtime that gave Northwest a 67-66 lead. With the game tied 70-70, Hayden hit a three-pointer to give the Bronchos a 73-70 lead with 1:15 to play in overtime. UCO's Wells split a pair at the line, paving the way for Hudgins to drain his 11th three-pointer of the game and leaving Northwest trailing 74-73 with :50.5 left. Northwest got a defensive stop and Isaiah Jackson drew a foul with :06.8 left to head to the line. Jackson hit both free throws to give Northwest a 75-74 lead.
 
UCO advanced the ball to half-court and took a timeout with :03.9 to play. The Bronchos lobbed the inbounds pass to Wade in the lane and he went up over two Bearcats to lay it in with :02.6 remaining. Northwest threw an inbounds pass to half-court where Byron Alexander took a timeout with :02.0 on the clock.
 
Hudgins took the inbounds pass and got up a potential game-winning three-pointer but it was off the right and the Bronchos claimed the win and their fans stormed the court.
 
Northwest will return to action Saturday in Wichita, Kan., against the Newman University Jets. Tip is set at 3:30 p.m. at Fugate Gymnasium on the Newman campus.
