No. 3 Grand Valley State too much for Bearcats

The Northwest Missouri State soccer team could not keep up with No. 3 Grand Valley State as the Bearcats dropped a 5-2 neutral site contest in Warrensburg, Missouri.

Northwest challenged Grand Valley, holding the Lakers scoreless for 32 minutes before Caitie Baron dropped in a goal assisted by Cecilia Steinwascher and Stephanie Sturgeon. After a yellow card on Ashley Williams, Steinwascher had the opportunity for a penalty kick but missed. However, she scored on the rebound attempt with less than four minutes to go in the half to take a 2-0 lead into the break.

In the second half, Grand Valley added another goal at 58:55, but the Bearcats quickly responded with a goal from Alex Mausbach at 63:11 to pull within 3-1. The Lakers would continue to roll with two consecutive goals to soar to a 5-1 lead with just under 20 minutes remaining in the match. Teagan Blackburn added a goal assisted by Hannah Stirling at 79:14, but the Bearcats did not have enough time to get the match any closer.

This is the Bearcats first loss of the season, dropping to a 2-1 record before Northwest hosts Minnesota State on Sunday afternoon. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m. at Bearcat Pitch.

NOTES: Teagan Blackburn scored her third goal of the season and now has eight career goals, the most by any Bearcat on the roster ... Hannah Stirling has recorded an assist in each of the last two matches ... keeper Ashley Williams was credited with six saves, nearly doubling her season total ... Grand Valley tallied 17 shots (11 on goal) compared to Northwest's 12 (8 on goal).
