TOPEKA, Kansas - The No. 20-ranked Washburn Ichabods edged out the No. 23-ranked Northwest Missouri State University men's tennis team in dual action Saturday at the Washburn Tennis Complex.
The Ichabods improved to 10-3 overall, while the Bearcats fell to 12-4 overall.
Northwest's No. 3 doubles pairing of Fabian Calloud and
Fillippo Piranomonte picked up the Bearcats's lone win in doubles action with a 6-2 triumph over WU's Daniel Bird and Raul-Alin Dicu. Washburn scored victories at No. 1 and No. 2 doubles to secure a 1-0 dual lead.
The teams would split the six singles matches giving the Ichabods a 4-3 victory.
Northwest's
Andrea Zamurri pulled out a three-set win over WU's Dicu at No. 1 singles, 6-3, 6-7, 6-4. The win gives Zamurri a perfect 15-0 record in singles this spring.
Calloud picked up his second win of the day with a three-set win at No. 2 singles. Calloud rallied from a one-set deficit against WU's Miquel Perez to score a 4-6, 6-4, 6-1 win. Calloud is 12-4 at No. 2 singles this season.
Martin Sanchez scored Northwest's final win of the day at No. 5 singles with another three-set victory. Sanchez dispatched WU's Marc Roura Casi by the count of 6-3, 4-6, 7-5 (7-4).
The Bearcats will prepare for the MIAA Championship meet set to begin Saturday in Edmond, Oklahoma.
