Bronchos take rubber match with Bearcats, 7-3

EDMOND, Oklahoma - The University of Central Oklahoma Bronchos took the third game of this weekend's series with the Northwest Missouri State University Bearcats, 7-3.

The Bronchos move to 14-11 overall and 10-8 in league action. Northwest falls to 12-14 overall and 10-11 in MIAA play.

UCO took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first and added a single run in the third.

The Bearcats dented the scoreboard in the fifth. Peter Carlson singled to right with one out and moved to third on a double from Ethan Judd. Jacob Pinkerton singled through the left side to plate Carlson to pull Northwest to within 3-1.

However, UCO added a solo homer and a bases loaded walk in the bottom of the fifth to up the lead to 5-1 for the home squad. Bearcat starter Zach Shadlow pitched into the fifth and allowed five runs on eight hits. Shadlow struck out two.

Northwest picked up a two-spot in the top of the sixth to cut the UCO lead to 5-3. Connor Quick doubled to center with one out. Ryan Koski singled to third to give the Bearcats two base runners. Matt Gastner delivered a two-run double down the left field line to score Koski and Quick. Ethan Judd drew a two-out walk, but pinch hitter Zane Jackson lined out to center to end the Bearcat scoring threat.

The Bronchos scored a pair of single runs in the seventh and eighth to lengthen the lead to 7-3.

Northwest put two runners on in the ninth as Pinkerton drew a walk and Brett Holden was hit by a pitch. However, Drew Mackie and Quick struck out to end the contest.

Northwest will return to play at 3 p.m. Tuesday in a non-conference contest against William Jewell in Liberty, Missouri.

NOTES: Northwest tallied 10 hits ... eight different Bearcat hitters registered a base hit ... Mackie and Quick each tallied two-hit games ... Pinkerton was credited with a stolen base ... Shadlow took the loss ... Phil Brenneman pitched 3 2/3 in relief and struck out seven UCO batters, while allowing two runs and five hits.
