Pair of one-run wins propel Bearcats past Jets in softball

MARYVILLE, Missouri - The Northwest Missouri State University softball team earned a pair of one-run wins to sweep a doubleheader from the Newman Jets at the Bearcat Softball Field.

Northwest (11-13 overall, 5-7 MIAA) took the opener, 3-2, and scored a walk-off win in game two, 4-3. Newman fell to 6-23 overall and 4-14 in MIAA play.

GAME ONE
Bearcat starter Breck Dickey scattered four hits and allowed two runs in picking up her fourth win of the season. Dickey struck out seven and walked two.

Dickey struck out the side in the first and did not allow a hit until the third. The only two runs she allowed came in the fifth and both were unearned.

The Bearcats staked Dickey to a run in the first and two more in the third. Kaitlyn Weis drove in a run with a single in the first. Weis scored the second run of the game on an error in the third. Madison Friest singled home Abby Nolte with the third run of the contest in the third.

Dickey allowed a leadoff single in the sixth but then retired the final six batters of the game to secure the win.

Hannah Blackford went 2-for-4 with a run scored, while Weis went 2-for-2 with a run and an RBI. Grace Jeffries went 2-for-3 hitting out of the nine spot.

GAME TWO
The Bearcats rallied from a 3-1 deficit to tally a 4-3 walk-off win and complete the doubleheader sweep.

Blackford reached on a fielder's choice in the bottom of the first. Blackford moved to second on an Olivia Daugherty single. Blackford took third on a flyout from Weis and scored on a wild pitch.

The Jets evened the contest at 1-1 in the top of the second but left the bases loaded.

Newman took a 2-1 advantage in the third when the first two batters reached via a double and a single.

Newman pushed the lead to 3-1 in the top of fifth as the first two batters reached to chase starter Raven Defrain from the game. Defrain pitched four innings and allowed seven hits and three runs (all earned), while striking out two.

Ashleigh Creek pitched two scoreless innings of relief in the fifth and sixth to keep the Bearcats within arms reach of the Jets.

Northwest crept closer in the bottom of the sixth with a run. Ady Watts ripped her second double of the game to left and eventually scored on a wild pitch.

Weis came on to pitch the seventh and worked around a one-out walk to keep Northwest to within 3-2.

Jacee Winn led off the seventh with a single. Blackford followed with a single up the middle to put runners on first and second. Daugherty reached on an error by Newman shortstop Annisa Ramos to lead the bases. Weis came through with a single to left field. Winn scored easily on the play and Blackford raced home with the winning run as Newman's Elisabeth McGill threw the ball in wildly for an error.

Blackford went 2-for-4 with two runs scored. Watts went 2-for-3 with two doubles. Northwest had only one RBI in the second game as two runs scored on wild pitches and the final run of the game scored on a Newman error.

Weis got the win to improve to 1-1 on the year.

The Bearcats will remain home for a doubleheader Tuesday at 2 p.m. against the Lincoln Blue Tigers.
