MARYVILLE, Missouri - The Northwest Missouri State University women's tennis team picked up a 6-1 MIAA dual victory over the Newman Jets Friday afternoon on the Frank Grube Courts at the
Mark Rosewell Tennis Center.
Northwest, ranked No. 9 in the Central Region, evened its season mark at 3-3 and moved to 1-0 in MIAA action. The Jets fell to 6-2 overall and 0-1 in league dual play.
The Bearcats took an early 1-0 lead in the dual by taking care of business in doubles play. Northwest scored wins at No. 2 doubles from
Vera Alenicheva and
Julia Aliseda and at No. 3 doubles from
Tessa Kwakernaak and
Kaylyn Chleborad.
Northwest continued its winning way in the singles competition by taking five of the six matches. Alenicheva won her sixth consecutive match at No. 1 singles with a 6-3, 6-1 triumph over Newman's Emily Young.
Julia Aliseda moved her mark to 4-0 at No. 3 singles with a 6-1, 7-5 win over Newman's Marie Brunet.
Tessa Kwakernaak went the distance at No. 2 singles and prevailed with a 4-6, 6-3, 6-3 victory over Newman's Isabela Bifano.
Sofia Pitnataro was able to hold off Newman's Antonia Ramos at No. 4 singles in a third-set tiebreaker, 10-5.
Victoria Caster cruised to a 6-0, 6-0 win at No. 6 singles over Newman's Lauren Esfeld.
Northwest will return to action Saturday at 1 p.m. by playing host to the Emporia State Hornets. The Hornets are 5-0 and will be playing their first MIAA competition of the spring.
