MARYVILLE, Mo. - The Northwest Missouri State University women's basketball team took its win streak to six in a row and moved to 2-0 in MIAA play with a 67-59 home victory over Rogers State.
Molly Hartnett led the way with 15 points.
Â
Head coach
Austin Meyer thought the Bearcats gave a complete effort in the victory.
Â
"Our offense was solid to finish the game," Meyer said. "Jordan Lewis was a Division I transfer for Rogers State and she was tough for us to guard, but we did limit them to one made three-pointer."
Â
Both squads got off to a slow start on the offensive end of the court as the Bearcats led 2-0 through the first five minutes of the contest. Rogers State eventually got going and took an 11-6 lead at the end of the first quarters.
Â
Northwest bounced back in the second quarter and leveled the game at the half, 23-23.
Â
The Bearcats enjoyed a 19-15 scoring edge in the third quarter to take a 42-38 lead. Northwest made 8-of-15 field goals in the third, including 3-of-5 from three-point range. Rogers State shot 5-of-14 from the floor in the third.
Â
Both squads lit it up in the fourth with Northwest owning a 25-21 scoring edge. Northwest went 6-of-10 from the field, but made hay at the line by sinking 12-of-14 free throws. Rogers State went 5-of-13 from the floor and 11-of-13 at the line in the fourth.
Â
Kylie Coleman knocked in a three-pointer with 4:54 left in the game to give the Bearcats a 12-point lead at 59-47. RSU's Lewis trimmed the lead in half to six at 59-53 with a pair of free throws with 2:44 to play.
Â
Mallory McConkey reached double figures with a bucket in the lane in the next Bearcat possession to push the margin back to eight with 2:28 left. The Hillcats cut the Bearcat lead back to six with 1;32 to play, but free throws from Hartnett and
Peyton Kelderman pushed the margin back to double figures at 65-55. Hartnett sank two more free throws in the closing seconds to finish off the Bearcat 67-59 triumph.
Â
Northwest enjoyed a 27-8 bench scoring edge with
Evelyn Vazquez scoring 12.
Â
"Evelyn was good for us off the bench and made some big shots," Meyer said. "We got some huge spot minutes from
Jillian Fleming and
Kelsey Fields."
Â
Field scored four points and grabbed four rebounds, while Fleming scored five points and dished out two assists.
