ST. JOSEPH, Mo. - Junior point guard
Trevor Hudgins scored a game-high 27 points to lift No. 1-ranked Northwest Missouri State past No. 21-ranked Seattle Pacific in the Small College Basketball Hall of Fame Classic held in Civic Arena.
Northwest collected its 45th straight neutral court win and improved to 2-0 on the young season. Seattle Pacific dropped to 1-1 overall.
The Bearcats overcame a sluggish offensive performance. Northwest made only 1-of-9 three-point shots and shot 39.5% from the field. The Bearcats drained 29-of-40 free throws as the Falcons were whistled for 26 fouls.
SPU claimed an early 12-5 lead over Northwest as the Bearcats made only one of their first seven field goal attempts. The Bearcats responded with a 14-0 run to take a 19-12 lead with 6:47 to play in the opening half. Northwest would close the half on a 25-7 run and took a 31-19 lead into the intermission.
The Bearcats gained their largest lead of the game at 50-35 with 10:07 to play. Northwest scored its final eight points of the game at the free throw line after
Wes Dreamer's final field goal at 6:26 gave the Bearcats a 56-41 lead. The Falcons refused to go away and whittled the lead down to single digits at 58-49 with 3:13 to play. The Falcons kept coming and would get as close as four at 60-56 with :23.7 left in the game. Northwest closed out the five-point win at 64-59.
Northwest will be in action again next Saturday and Sunday at Municipal Auditorium in the Central Region Challenge. Northwest will take on Sioux Falls (Saturday) and Arkansas-Monticello (Sunday).
