The Northwest Missouri State soccer team will take on another program first in 2021 by playing host to its first MIAA Tournament game Sunday against the Washburn University Ichabods.
No. 3-seeded Northwest (12-5-1 overall, 8-2-1 MIAA) and No. 6-seeded Washburn (9-6-2 overall, 5-5-1 MIAA) will meet at the Bearcat Pitch at 1 p.m. in an MIAA Tournament quarterfinal matchup. Admission to the match is $5 (cash only).
The winner of the Northwest-Washburn matchup will take on the winner of the Emporia State-Northeastern State winner in the MIAA semifinals. The semifinal matches will be held Friday, Nov. 12 and the MIAA Tournament championship match will be held Sunday, Nov. 14. The semifinals and final will be hosted by the top remaining seed following the quarterfinal matches.
The Ichabods hold a 14-8-4 lead in the all-time series with the Bearcats. Northwest has won the last two meetings including a 1-0 overtime win in Topeka, Kan., in 2019 and a 5-0 shutout triumph at the Bearcat Pitch on Oct. 1 of this season.
The Bearcats enter the MIAA Tournament in the midst of a four-match win streak. Northwest has won seven of its last eight matches to close the regular season.
Northwest set the program's wins record this season with 12 victories besting the previous mark of 11 set in 2009. Under the direction of head coach
Marc Gordon, the Bearcats have increased their win totals in each of his seasons. Northwest went 2-15 (1-10 MIAA) in 2018, 6-10-3 (4-5-2 MIAA) in 2019 and has produced a mark of 12-5-1 (8-2-1 MIAA) this season.

The Bearcats have had plenty of success this season in overtime matches. Northwest is 3-0-1 in overtime matches. Northwest and Central Missouri tied 2-2 on Sept. 26. Since then, Northwest has recorded three consecutive road overtime victories over Nebraska-Kearney (2-1, OT), Fort Hays State (1-0, 2OT) and Missouri Southern (W, 2-1 2OT).
Northwest is nearly the same team at home as it has been on the road this season. Northwest is 6-2-1 at home and 6-2-0 on the road. It's only the second time in school history the Bearcats have produced a winning record on the road. The 2012 Bearcats went 4-3-1. The six road victories are also a program best in a single season.

Northwest has already set the single-season goals scored record with 36 in 2021. The previous mark of 35 was set in 2011. In head coach

The Bearcats have broken the single-season assists record with 26 in 2021. It marks the second straight season that Northwest has upped the assist record. Northwest produced 24 assists in 2019 that shattered the previous record of 22 set in 2006.

Teagan Blackburn (Council Bluffs, Iowa) leads the squad with nine goals scored in 2021. Blackburn is tied for the MIAA lead in game-winning goals (5). Blackburn ranks tied for No. 4 in the MIAA in goals scored. She also ranks No. 5 in the MIAA in points scored (22). Blackburn has been credited with 14 career goals, which ranks No. 4 on Northwest's all-time goals scored chart.

Ashley Williams (Riverside, Calif.) has tallied five shutouts in 2021. She ranks fourth in the MIAA in total shutouts (5). Kira Lazenby set the Northwest single-season shutout record with eight in 2008 and 2009. Williams has also registered a mark of 7-4-0 as the keeper. Her seven wins ranks tied for the fifth-most goalkeeper wins in a Bearcat season.
