Soccer looks to pick up first NCAA Tournament win at Emporia State

After securing the program's first-ever trip to the NCAA Tournament, the Northwest Missouri State University women's soccer team will look to earn a postseason victory with a rematch against the Emporia State University Hornets.
 
Northwest (13-6-1) and Emporia State (18-2-1)met last Friday in the semifinals of the 2021 MIAA Tournament in Warrensburg, Mo. The Hornets scored a 2-0 win over Northwest and went on to defeat Central Missouri for the 2021 MIAA Tournament championship.
 
This week the rematch will take place on Emporia State's home field, the ESU Soccer Pitch, Friday at 1 p.m. It will be the second NCAA Tournament match of the day on the field as Bemidji State and Central Oklahoma will square off at 10 a.m. The winner of the Bemidji State-Central Oklahoma match will meet the winner of the Northwest-ESU match Sunday at 2 p.m. in Emporia.
 
Emporia State holds a 17-11-2 lead in the all-time series with Northwest. The Hornets picked up a 4-1 win over the Bearcats on Oct. 3 in Maryville, Mo., prior to their 2-0 win over the Bearcats in the MIAA Tournament.
 
The last time Northwest and Emporia State met in Emporia came at the conclusion of the 2019 season. ESU posted a 3-2 double overtime victory over Northwest in the quarterfinals of the 2019 MIAA Tournament.
 
Northwest's last win over Emporia State came Oct. 20, 2017, when the Bearcats tallied a 1-0 win at ESU.
 
Northwest had won a program-best five matches in a row entering the MIAA Tournament. Northwest's five-match win streak was the longest same-season win streak in program history.

Sophomore Kaylie Rock recorded Northwest's ninth all-time hat track in the victory over the Ichabods. Rock has scored 10 goals, one away from the Northwest single-season mark for goals scored. Rock has also produced a team-high tying 23 points on the year. Rock ranks No. 4 in the MIAA in shots (76).
 
Sophomore Teagan Blackburn (Council Bluffs, Iowa) ranks tied for second in the MIAA in game-winning goals (5). Blackburn ranks tied for No. 6 in the MIAA in goals scored (9). She also ranks tied for No. 5 in the MIAA in points scored (23). Blackburn has been credited with 14 career goals, which ranks No. 4 on Northwest's all-time goals scored chart.

Rock and Blackburn have each tallied 23 points on the season, which ranks as the third-best total in program history. Blackburn has posted 34 career points to rank tied for No. 4 in Bearcat history. Rock has registered 31 career points, which ranks No. 7 on Northwest's all-time points list.

Redshirt freshman Sophie Cissell (Liberty, Mo.) set Northwest single-season assists record with seven. Cissell is tied for second in the MIAA in assists. Cissell scored her first goal of the season in Northwest's 5-0 MIAA quarterfinal win over Washburn.

Redshirt freshman goalkeeper Ashley Williams (Riverside, Calif.) has tallied six shutouts in 2021. She ranks tied for third in the MIAA in total shutouts (6). Kira Lazenby set the Northwest single-season shutout record with eight in 2008 and 2009. Williams has also registered a mark of 8-4-0 as the keeper. Her eight wins ranks as the fifth-most goalkeeper wins in a Bearcat season.

Northwest has set the program's wins record this season with 13 victories besting the previous mark of 11 set in 2009. Under the direction of head coach Marc Gordon, the Bearcats have increased their win totals in his of his seasons. Northwest went 2-15 (1-10 MIAA) in 2018, 6-10-3 (4-5-2 MIAA) in 2019 and has produced a mark of 13-5-1 (8-2-1 MIAA) this season.

The Bearcats have had plenty of success this season in overtime matches. Northwest is 3-0-1 in overtime matches. Northwest and Central Missouri tied 2-2 on Sept. 26. Since then, Northwest has recorded three consecutive road overtime victories over Nebraska-Kearney (2-1, OT), Fort Hays State (1-0, 2OT) and Missouri Southern (W, 2-1 2OT).
 
Northwest is nearly the same team at home as it has been on the road this season. Northwest is 7-2-1 at home and 6-2-0 on the road. It's only the second time in school history the Bearcats have produced a winning record on the road. The 2012 Bearcats went 4-3-1. The six road victories are also a program best in a single season.

Northwest has set the single-season goals scored record with 41 in 2021. The previous mark of 35 was set in 2011. In head coach Marc Gordon's first season in 2018, Northwest tallied only nine goals. Northwest then upped that number to 31 in his second season in 2019.

The Bearcats have broken the single-season assists record with 32 in 2021. It marks the second straight season that Northwest has upped the assist record. Northwest produced 24 assists in 2019 that shattered the previous record of 22 set in 2006.
