Volleyball runs win streak to five in a row with 3-1 triumph at Newman

WICHITA, Kan. - The No. 10-ranked Northwest Missouri State University volleyball team ran its win streak to five in a row with a 3-1 road victory over the Newman University Jets.

Northwest (12-2 overall, 5-1 MIAA) won by set scores of 20-25, 25-21, 26-24 and 25-17. Newman fell to 6-8 overall and 2-6 in MIAA play. Northwest improved to 10-0 all-time vs. Newman.

The Bearcats lost the opening set for the sixth time this season, but improved their mark to 5-1 when dropping the first set. Newman scored a 25-20 win in the opener which featured 13 ties and four lead changes. Newman hit .229 in the set with 11 kills and three errors, while Northwest hit .120 with 17 kills and 11 errors. 

Northwest evened the match at a set apiece with a 25-21 victory in the second. Jaden Ferguson led the attack with five kills in the set. Northwest hit .278 with 17 kills and seven errors. Northwest limited Newman to a .161 hitting percentage.

The Bearcats were extended to a 26-24 win in the pivotal third set. Northwest overcame a .100 hitting percentage in a set that featured seven ties and six lead changes.

Northwest put the match away in the fourth with a 25-17 triumph. Northwest was simply on fire in the fourth with a .650 hitting percentage that included 15 kills and only two attack errors. Northwest enjoyed a 76% side out effort in the fourth. Payton Kirchhoefer pounded down a team-best five kills in the clinching set.

Kirchhoefer led the way with 15 kills, but was joined in the attack by Rachel Sturdevant (14 kills) and Ferguson (11 kills). Alyssa Rezac registered 48 assists, while Hannah Koechl netted a team-best 15 digs.

Northwest will take on Central Oklahoma Saturday at 3 p.m. in Edmond, Okla.
