Coming into the weekend invitational, the Bearcats (2-2) have made their name at the plate, scoring a combined 34 runs in four games to open the 2020 season.
Junior infielder
Matt Gastner is already making his mark on the young season, leading the Northwest offense in hits (7), home runs (3) and RBI (11). In 16 at bats, Gastner owns a .438 batting average and a 1.063 slugging percentage.
Another key contributor in the batter's box is junior
Peter Carlson. Starting in all four games for the Bearcats, Carlson has notched a team-high 1.083 slugging percentage, while tallying six hits, four RBI and scoring five runs. In 12 at bats, Carlson has earned a .500 batting average.
On the bump, junior DMACC transfer
Spencer Hanson has led the charge for Northwest. In his appearance against Southeastern Oklahoma State, Hanson accumulated a team-best three strikeouts in six innings pitched. In 21 batters faced, Hanson has held hitters to a .238 batting average.
Northwest gets set to face-off against the host team Henderson State Feb. 7 in its first game of the invitational.
Currently, the Bearcats lead the all-time series 7-6 over the Reddies, with their last win coming in 2017. During the 2019 season, Northwest fell short to Henderson State, 8-6.
