Northwest moves to 2-0 by defeating Quincy

TOPEKA, Kansas – The Northwest Missouri State University Bearcat women's volleyball team improved to 2-0 on the season with its second victory of the day at the Washburn Invitational.
 
Northwest defeated Quincy by set scores of 25-17, 25-16, 21-25 and 25-18.
 
The Bearcats opened the match with a 25-17 triumph in the opening set. Northwest hit .300 with 13 kills, while holding Quincy to 10 kills and a .097 hitting percentage.
 
Northwest continued its torrid hitting by turning out a .370 hitting percentage in the second set en route to a 25-16 triumph. Quincy was limited to nine kills and a .032 hitting percentage in the second stanza.
 
Quincy jumped out early in the third set and built an 11-5 lead. The lead would grow to 17-10 before Northwest used a 10-3 spurt to even the set at 20-20. But Quincy weathered the Northwest comeback attempt and was able to topple the Bearcats in the third, 25-21. The Bearcats hit .229 in the third set with 12 kills and one attack error.
 
The Bearcats were able to finish off the Hawks in the fourth set, 25-18. Northwest hit .351 in the fourth with 16 kills and three attack errors.
 
Hallie Sidney pounded a team-high tying 15 kills, including a six in the second set alone.
 
Bethany Elkins hit .526 with 11 kills and only one attack error. Elkins added four blocks.
 
Morgan Lewis tied Sidney with a team-high 15 kills. Lewis also set a career-high with seven blocks assists. Her previous best of six blocks came on Oct. 21, 2017 vs. Emporia State.
 
Maddy Ahrens posted a match-high 40 assists, while Rachel Sturdevant secured a team-best 12 digs in the victory.
 
The Bearcats will be back in action Saturday at the Washburn Invitational with matches against Williams Jewell (9:30 a.m.) and Drury (1:30 p.m.).
