No. 11 Bearcats post four-set triumph over Gorillas

PITTSBURG, Kansas - The No. 11-ranked Northwest Missouri State University Bearcat volleyball team posted a four-set win at Pittsburg State on Friday.

Northwest won by set scores of 15, 25, 31-29, 25-16 and 25-22. The battle of MIAA unbeatens ended with the Bearcats moving to 3-0 in MIAA play.

The Bearcats extended their win streak to four in a row behind a career-high kill performance from freshman Jadyn Ferguson. Ferguson posted 19 kills and added three blocks.

Sophomore Rachel Sturdevant secured a career-high 16 kills and 11 digs. Sturdevant notched her eighth double-figure dig effort on the season.

Sophomore Bethany Elkins put up a strong night as well with 15 kills (.538). For Elkins, it marked the fifth straight match she reached double figures in kills.

Junior Maddy Ahrens ran the offense and was credited with her fifth double-double on the season.

The Bearcats started slowly in the opening set and the Gorillas took advantage with a 25-15 win. Northwest had 11 kills and 12 errors and only sided out at 36 percent in the first set.

Northwest started to turn things around in the second but had to go a little extra to level the match. Northwest drew even on the Pittsburg State home floor with a 31-29 victory. Northwest pounded out 21 kills and hit .391 in the second.

The Bearcats were nearly flawless in the third set as they took control of the match with a 25-16 win. Northwest had 19 kills and no attack errors as the Bearcats hit .594 and sided out at 94 percent.

Northwest finished off the four-set win with a 25-22 victory. Northwest limited Pittsburg State to a .049 hitting percentage in the fourth.

The Bearcats will travel to Missouri Southern on Saturday for a 1 p.m. match.
