MARYVILLE, Missouri - The Northwest Missouri State University women's soccer team used a barrage of second-half goals to score a 4-0 win over visiting Sioux Falls on Friday at the Bearcat Soccer Pitch.
After battling to a scoreless tie in the first half, the Northwest offense exploded with four goals in the final 45 minutes to capture the squad's first win of the season.
Northwest broke the tie when
Madie Krueger scored on an assist from
Taylor Wolfe in the 50th minute.
Following a yellow card in the 56th minute on Sioux Falls' Olivia Valdez, Northwest's
Izzy Romano put the ball back into play and nearly scored. Romano's kick was deflected by the Sioux Falls goalkeeper and
Alex Mausbach was in the right spot to put the ball in the back of the net off the rebound to expand the Bearcat lead 2-0 over the Cougars.
In the 77th minute,
Madi McKeever connected with freshman
Kaitlyn Case for a goal to push the lead to 3-0.
In the 84th minute, it was Case again who found the net and gave Northwest a 4-0 lead.
Kaylie Rock assisted on the goal.
The Bearcats improve to 1-1-1 on the year. Goalkeeper
Alexis Serna Castillo recorded four saves and her first career shutout.
Northwest will return to the Bearcat Pitch Sunday to take on Augustana at 1 p.m.
NOTES: The four goals is the most scored by a Northwest team since a 6-0 win over Southwest Baptist on Sept. 29, 2017 ... it's also the first time that Northwest has scored at least four goals in the second half of a match since tallying five second-half goals vs. Wayne State on Sept. 5, 2013 en route to an 8-1 victory ...
