Coming into the contest, the Bearcats (No. 8) (20-25, 15-15 MIAA) sit four spots behind the Hornets (No. 4) in the MIAA conference race. Six teams have already clinched spots for the 2019 MIAA Championship, the Hornets being one with the Bearcats knocking on the door. Northwest needs one victory (or one Washburn loss) to clinch a spot in the 2019 MIAA Tournament.

Northwest controls the No. 3 slot in the MIAA for team batting average (.287), five spots ahead of Emporia State at No. 8 (.268). The Bearcats are led in the batter's box by junior first baseman Connor Quick (.382), who continues to sit among the MIAA's top-10 best individual batting averages at No. 4. Quick enters the series riding a team-high 29-game on-base streak.

On the mound, junior pitcher Quintin Van Ackeren leads Northwest pitching with 73 innings pitched, allowing 54 runs (41 earned) on 89 hits and has struck out 56 batters on the year. Van Ackeren and junior Joe Funkhouser have both thrown a team-high 56 strikeouts.

After notching a save during the Lindenwood series April 26-28, senior Trevor Dudar is tied for No. 18 in the nation in saves on the year (8).

Emporia State (27-17 overall, 19-11 MIAA) is coming off a 2-1 series win over Northeastern State.
