Northwest loses shootout against Henderson State 8-6

Box Score ARKADELPHIA, Arkansas – The Northwest Missouri State baseball team dropped an offensive barnburner at Henderson State, 8-6.

Northwest starter Quintin Van Ackeren pitched two-hit ball through the first three innings and then the Bearcats staked him to a 2-0 advantage in the top of the fourth. Peter Carlson reached base after being hit by a pitch and advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt and error. Carlson would eventually score on a balk. Calvin Rudolph scored the second run of the inning on an RBI groundout from Logan Rycraft. Both Bearcat runs were unearned.

Henderson State dented the scoreboard with a five-run fourth to take its first lead of the contest. The Reddies did their damage in the fourth on three hits, two walks and benefited from one Bearcat error.

Carlson provided the Bearcat scoring bang in the fifth when he connected on a grand slam to left field. It was Carlson's first home run as a Bearcat after transferring from Nebraska-Kearney in the offseason.

Henderson State evened up the score in the bottom half of the fifth frame on a one-out single.

Northwest left a pair of runners on in the sixth when Jay Hrdlicka walked and Connor Quick roped a double down the left field line with two outs. Alixon Herrera grounded out to end the threat.

The Reddies notched a pair of runs in the bottom of the eighth. Northwest retired the first two batters in the eighth before HSU's Caleb Carr reached on a single and advanced to third  on an error by Bearcat right fielder Matt Schingel. Carr would score on a balk. HSU would add an insurance run on a Joe Myers' RBI single.

The Bearcats went down in order in the ninth.

Northwest drops to 1-4 on the season, while Henderson State moves to 2-1.

Northwest will be back in action Feb. 8 as it stays in Arkadelphia, Arkansas to take on Southern Arkansas at 3 p.m.
