Softball winless in Emporia State twin bill


Story Headlines
- The Northwest Missouri State softball team dropped a pair of pitcher's duels to Emporia State Friday afternoon in Emporia, Kan.
- The Bearcats, ranked No. 25 in the latest NFCA coaches poll, dropped game one, 1-0, before allowing a pair of runs in the sixth to come up short in game two, 3-2.
- Northwest falls to 34-12 overall and 17-7 in the conference, while the Hornets improved to 21-30 this season and 9-15 in the MIAA.
- Northwest outhit the Hornets on the day, 11-10.
 
Game One Key Statistics (#25 Northwest 0, Emporia State 1)
- Northwest had runners on base in six of the seven innings, leaving runners in scoring position four times.
- Kendle Schieber (19-5) took the hard-luck loss, giving up just four hits across six innings while striking out seven. The lone Hornet run came on a solo home run in the bottom of the fifth.
- Alexis Kelsey reached base twice, drawing a walk in the first before sending a single up the middle in the sixth.
- Madison Jones walked and doubled, but was stranded in scoring position each time on base.
- Torri Blythe doubled to lead off the contest, finishing 1-for-3.
- Freshman Jaedra Moses reached on an infield single in her second at bat.

Game One Key Innings
- Blythe doubled down the left field line on the second pitch of the game. Kelsey drew a walk two batters later, but each were left stranded.

- Schieber retired the first eight hitters in the game.

- Eryn Stockman handed the Hornets the lead in the bottom of the fifth when she sent a 1-0 pitch over the fence in left.
 
Game Two Key Statistics (#25 Northwest 2, Emporia State 3.)
- Sarah Baldwin (9-5) was handed the loss after giving up three runs on six hits in 5.2 innings of work. The senior struck out three batters and walked three.
- Taylor Blackford came on to record the final out of the contest, the lefty's fourth appearance of the year.
- Rebecca Maher finished 2-for-3 with her team-leading 15th double of the season and one RBI.
- Kendle Schieber picked up a pair of base hits, driving in one run.
- Sophomore Jessica Rawie scored one run, finishing 1-for-3 with a double.
- Second baseman Torri Blythe singled and scored, stealing her 19th and 20th bases of the season.

Game Two Key Innings
- Blythe opened the contest with a single to right. After swiping second, Blythe scored when Maher doubled past third base, handing Northwest an early 1-0 lead.

- Northwest extended its lead in the fourth inning when Rawie doubled to left center. The catcher scored two batters later on Schieber's single to left, giving the Bearcats a two-run lead.

- The Hornets battled back with a single run in the fifth before taking the lead with a pair of runs in the sixth.

- The Bearcats will wrap up the regular season tomorrow afternoon when they head to Topeka, Kan. for a doubleheader with Washburn. First pitch is set for 1 p.m.
