Softball sweeps Washburn in regular season finale


Story Headlines
- The Northwest Missouri State softball team wrapped up the regular season with a pair of victories over Washburn Saturday afternoon in Topeka, Kan.
- The bats came alive for the No. 25-ranked Bearcats, who rattled off 12 hits in each contest.
- Northwest captured game one by a score of 8-4 before topping the Ichabods in six innings in the nightcap, 10-0.
- The Bearcats close the regular season 36-12 overall, the most regular season wins in school history. Northwest heads into the postseason with a 19-7 mark in the MIAA, placing the Bearcats in a tie for second with Pittsburg State and Central Oklahoma. The Ichabods wrap up the year 19-27 and 8-18 in conference action.
- Kendle Schieber earned her 20th victory of the season, tying the record for most wins in a single season (Shelly Navara, 1987).
 
Game One Key Statistics (#25 Northwest 8, Washburn 4)
- Schieber (20-5) tossed five effective innings, allowing one earned run on nine hits and one walk. The senior struck out two, bringing her season total to 110 punchouts.
- Chantel Adams drove in three runs and scored another on a pair of singles, finishing 2-for-4.
- Shortstop Rebecca Maher singled three times, scoring twice and driving in one run.
- Freshman Jaedra Moses scored two runs, going 2-for-3 with a stolen base.
- Torri Blythe finished 2-for-4 with a double, scoring a pair of runs and knocking in another.
- Senior Madison Jones doubled in a run in her third at bat, finishing 1-for-4.
- First baseman Alexis Kelsey reached base twice with a walk and a single, driving in one run and crossing the plate once.
- Rachel Smith came on to pitch the final two innings, giving up a trio of runs on four hits while striking out one.

Game One Key Innings
- The Bearcats broke through in the top of the third when Moses collected the first hit of the day, a single up the middle. Blythe followed with a double to right center, allowing the speedy Moses to score easily after swiping second. Maher made it three consecutive hits with a single of her own, plating Blythe. Adams added another run two batters later when she singled down the left field line, scoring Maher and handing Northwest a 3-0 advantage.

- Singles from Blythe, Maher and Kelsey loaded the bases in the top of the fifth with no outs. Adams knocked in a pair of runs with a single to right before heading to second on an error. Jessica Rawie plated a run with an RBI groundout before Jones drove home Adams with a double to right center.

- Northwest added another run in the sixth after Moses reached on a bunt single to the left side of the infield. The freshman moved to third on Maher's single before scoring when Kelsey lifted a sacrifice fly to right.
 
Game Two Key Statistics (#25 Northwest 10, Washburn 0, six innings)
- Sarah Baldwin (10-5) turned in her seventh complete game shutout of the year, third-most in the MIAA. The senior allowed just four baserunners, striking out four and retiring the side in order four times.
- Alexis Kelsey lifted her 12th home run of the season, tied for fourth on the single season all-time list. The freshman first baseman finished 2-for-4 with five RBI and one run scored.
- Catcher Jessica Rawie connected with her sixth long ball of the year, driving in two runs after a 2-for-4 effort.
- Sophomore Rebecca Maher scored three runs on the day, finishing 2-for-4 with a double and one RBI.
- Middle infielder Torri Blythe turned in a 2-for-4 outing at the plate, crossing the plate three times.
- Outfielder Jaedra Moses reached base twice, scoring each time.

Game Two Key Innings
- The Bearcats grabbed a quick 1-0 lead in the top of the first after Blythe singled to right on the third pitch of the game. After swiping second, Blythe scored on Kelsey's single through the left side.

- Northwest doubled its lead in the third when Maher reached on a one out double to right center. Adams knocked her in two batters later with a single to left.

- The Bearcats broke things open two innings later when Moses and Blythe both reached on infield singles to open the fifth. Maher knocked one in with a single to center before Kelsey cleared the bases with a deep drive to rigth center. Rawie followed suit with a home run of her own two batters later, this time to straightaway center, extending the Northwest lead to 7-0.

- A single from Kiana Baderdeen and a walk to Moses led off the top of the sixth, ultimately leading to a run scoring when Maher reached on an error by the third baseman. Kelsey grounded out to score another run in the next at bat. Rawie capped off the scoring for Northwest with a single to left later in the inning, plating Maher.
 
Up Next
- The Bearcats will head to Oklahoma City, Okla. to participate in the 2016 MIAA Softball Championship Tournament next week, with first and second round action set to begin Thursday, April 28. Tournament seedings, bracket and schedule will be released later this weekend.
