Baseball opens series with extra innings win


Story Headlines
- The Northwest Missouri State University baseball team beat Washburn, 12-10, in 11 innings on Thursday evening at Falley Field in Topeka, Kan.
- The Bearcats improved to 10-6 overall and 5-2 in conference play. The Ichabods fall to 8-8 overall and 3-4 in MIAA action.
- Washburn scored the tying run in the bottom of the eighth to send the game to extra innings. Northwest got two runs in the 11th and Carson Smith finished the contest for the victory.
- Smith pitched 3.1 innings of scoreless relief. He struck out three and walked two, allowing just one hit.
- Kolby Greenslade went 4-for-6, scoring three runs with a pair of RBI and a double.

Key Northwest Statistics
- Northwest scored three runs in the third, one in the fifth, one in the sixth, five in the seventh and two in the 11th. The Bearcats finished with 15 hits but committed four errors.
- Washburn scored 10 runs on seven hits with three errors, leading to four unearned runs. The Ichabods got two runs in the second, two in the third, three in the fifth and single runs in the sixth, seventh and eighth innings.
- Derek Meyer was 3-for-3 with a double and a run scored.
- Jake Lewis went 2-for-4 with a double, a run scored and a pair of RBI.
- Garrett Fort was 2-for-5 with a run scored and an RBI. He also drew a pair of walks.
- Jay Hrdlicka and Aaron Barratt each went 1-for-5 with a walk. Both crossed the plate twice as well. Hrdlick had a double and an RBI.
- Ozzie Adams went 1-for-4 with a run scored and an RBI. He drew three walks.
- Nick Gotta was 1-for-5 and finished the day with three RBI. He also drew a walk.
- Zachary Douglas drew a pair of walk and scored a run after entering the game in the bottom of the sixth inning.
- Joseph Hietpas got the start on the mound, going 4.0 innings. He allowed four hits and seven runs, only three of which were earned.
- Nikko Pablo pitched the fifth and sixth innings, allowing a run with a pair of strikeouts.
- The 12 runs and 15 hits were both season-highs for Northwest. It was the most runs scored since a 20-10 win over Nebraska-Kearney on March 13, 2015.

Key Northwest Innings
- Meyer led off the third with a double and move to third two batters later on a Fort single. Meyer would score on an Adams infield single as Fort advanced to second. With one down, Gotta reached on a fielder's choice and went to second on an error by the second baseman. The error allowed Fort to score and Adams to move to third. Hrdlicka hit a sacrifice fly to center to drive in Adams to give Northwest a 3-2 lead.

- Lewis hit an RBI double in the fifth to tie the game, 4-4. Hrdlicka, who reached on a fielder's choice after Gotta's leadoff single, scored from second.

- In the sixth, Greenslade scored as he reached on a fielder's choice after Meyer's leadoff single. Gotta hit into a fielder's choice with the bases loaded to drive in Greenslade to make it 7-5 Washburn.

- The Bearcats plated five in the seventh on four hits and an Ichabod error. Hrdlicka led off with a double down the right field line. Handzlik walked to put two on with no outs. Lewis came up big again with a single to right, scoring Hrdlicka. Handzlik was out trying to take third as Lewis moved to second on the throw. Barratt drew a walk which prompted a pitching change. Douglas drew a walk to load the bases bringing up Greenslade who delivered a two RBI single up the middle to plate Lewis and Barratt, tying the score, 8-8. Fort hit an RBI single to drive in Douglas and went to second on an error by the first baseman, allowing Greenslade to move to third. Adams and Gotta drew back-to-back walks to drive in Greenslade, making it 10-8 Bearcats.

- Northwest took advantage of another Washburn error to score the go ahead runs in the the 11th. Barratt led off with a single to left and Douglas walked. Greenslade singled and on an error by the third baseman, Barratt scored from second and Douglas advanced to third. Two batters later with the bases loaded and one down, Gotta hit a sacrifice fly to left to score Greenslade from third to put the Bearcats up, 12-10.
