Bearcats sweep Lions to cap MIAA opening weekend


Story Headlines
- The Northwest Missouri State University volleyball team picked up a 3-0 sweep over Missouri Southern on Saturday night in Bearcat Arena.
- The win moves Northwest to 9-3 overall and 2-0 in MIAA play. The Lions fall to 0-12 on the year and 0-2 in conference action.
- Freshman Maddy Bruder had a match best 18 kills. It was her seventh double-digit kill performance of the season.

Key Northwest Statistics
- The Bearcats won the match by scores of 25-21, 25-18 and 25-16.
- Along with Bruder's 18 kills, she also added five digs and a service ace. She hit .455 for the match with just three errors.
- Jackie Becker had 11 kills and added a pair of blocks at the middle position. Her .440 attack percentage was second only to Bruder's on the day.
- Miranda Foster had nine kills to go aloing with her five digs and three blocks. Foster also added a service ace.
- Aarika Wittenburg had a team-best 12 digs and had a pair of assists.
- Sarah Dannettell had 41 assists, the fifth time she has eclipsed 40+ assists in a match and her first in a three set match.
- Gabby Torline had two service aces.
- Northwest hit .261 for the match with 47 kills. The Bearcats' best set came in the second, hitting .385 with 18 kills and just three errors.
- The last time Northwest started a season 9-3 was in 1998. That team ran its record to 10-3 before eventually finishing the year 21-12.

Key Northwest Sequence
- Trailing, 14-12, in the opening set, Northwest rallied with a 9-1 run to ensure an early lead over the Lions. Bruder started the run with a kill and Dannettell followed it up with an ace. After a bad set by MSSU, Alexis Williams and Bruder tallied back-to-back kills to force a Lion timeout. Bruder added another kill to make it 18-14 Northwest. After a Bearcat attacking error., Bruder came up with another kill off a Dannettell assist. Foster came up with a solo block to make it 20-15 Northwest and after another Southern attacking error, the Bearcats took a 21-15 lead.

- Northwest's homestand continues with a 7 p.m. MIAA match against Pittsburg State on Friday, Oct. 2, in Bearcat Arena. On Saturday, Northwest will host Central Oklahoma at 3 p.m.
